Destiny remains in Coventry City’s hands after goalless draw with Wycombe Wanderers

The Sky Blues could only manage a point against the bottom of the table Chairboys at St. Andrews as the direction of their season remains unclear.

Mark Robins’ side will certainly feel like it was two points dropped rather than one gained as the chance to distance themselves from the relegation zone went begging.

The stalemate was of little help to either side’s Championship survival hopes with two of the bottom three – Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday – winning away from home.

Coventry in particular will class the game as a missed opportunity having won all six of their previous meetings with Wycombe and, considering the visitors rock-bottom status, should have picked up three points.

However, the Sky Blues produced another disappointing performance as they wasted several clear cut chances in the first half and now teeter on the edge of the bottom-three with only a four point cushion in 20th place.

The ‘home’ side could have been a goal ahead after just 54 seconds when Fankaty Dabo squared a cross to Gus Hamer who sidefooted his effort wide of the post.

Five minutes later another opening was missed when Anthony Stewart stumbled on the ball allowing Max Biamou to race through on goal, only to see his low effort blocked by the onrushing David Stockdale in the visitors net.

Sam McCallum then sent Biamou through down the left a few minutes later but his first touch let him down as he shanked his volley wide of the target.

All the action had seemed to been used up by the time second-half rolled around with neither side offering anything in the final third.

As City’s forwards faded into the back ground on the hour mark, Wanderers mustered their first attempt on goal with the introduction of winger Fred Onyedinma, whose strike forced goalkeeper Ben Wilson to parry past the post. 

The final chance did fall to Coventry though as two of their attacking substitutes nearly conjured a last-minute winner, but Matty Godden’s off-target effort on goal just evaded Tyler Walkers out-stretched foot.

Many Sky Blues fans hoped Robins would start with two-front men with Kyle McFadzean suspension permitting  a chance to change from a three at the back and against seeming weak opposition. So if no formation change is made following this weekend’s stalemate, the groans will surely grow louder during the run in.

For Gareth Ainsworth’s team, they live to fight another day but being 11 points from safety, their next defeat will all but confirm their doom.

And if Coventry continue to wasteful in front of goal, they could be condemned to a similar fate come the end of the season.
