Sheffield United aim to haul themselves off the bottom of the Premier League as they face Chelsea at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United have the chance to move off the bottom of the league with a victory, but it won’t be easy as they host a revitalised Chelsea at Bramall Lane.

Chris Wilder’s men were able to get themselves level with the all-time lowest points tally in the Premier League last week (11) after an impressive win against high-flying Manchester United. Two goals either side of a Harry Maguire header saw the Blades take a valuable three points from Old Trafford.

Sheffield United then travelled to their Manchester rivals three days later, Gabriel Jesus’ goal in the ninth minute helped Pep Guardiola’s City edge past the Yorkshire side.

Then in their last outing in midweek, the Blades faced West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane in relegation six-pointer with United rock-bottom and the Baggies in 19th.

The scoring was opened four minutes before the end of the first half, Callum Robinson forced Aaron Ramsdale to make a good save with the Sheffield United goalkeeper parrying the ball to his left. The rebound fell to Mbaye Diagne, whose shot deflected off Ramsdale and had to be cleared off the line by Ethan Ampadu. But Matt Phillips was there to tap the ball into the back of the net from close range to give Albion the lead.

The home side continued to work relentlessly in the second half to get a goal back and they were able to do so. Ten minutes into the second period, Jayden Bogle was able to pounce on a loose ball, he swivelled and hit his shot first time which nestled into the right-hand corner of Sam Johnstone’s goal.

Billy Sharp then put his side in front in the 73rd minute. Chris Basham, who was involved in the first goal for Sheffield United, crossed the ball into the box which bounced off John Egan but fell to Sharp, who able to pounce and tap the ball into the back of the net.

It was a vital win game for the Blades who have picked up six points out a possible nine. As it stands, Sheffield United are ten points from safety, but will be hoping to put on a run of form which can help them towards a third season in the Premier League.

Their opponents this weekend, Chelsea, come into the fixture on decent form under new manager, Thomas Tuchel. The German secured his first two victories as the Blues boss with the first being a 2-0 win over Burnley at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Cesar Azpilicueta scored the opener with Marcos Alonso’s goal in the dying embers of the match handing the German manager his first three points.

During midweek, the London club faced their neighbours from the north side of the capital, Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tuchel’s men were in front in the 25th minute. The Blues relentlessly controlled the game as a through ball found Timo Werner in space.

Eric Dier attempted to intercept the ball but Werner skipped past him, the defender then lunged to get the ball back, however clipped the forward to give away a needless penalty.

Jorginho stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of Hugo Lloris’ goal as the away side went into the half-time interval with a one-goal lead.

And it proved to be the winning goal too. Spurs rarely threatened keeper Edouard Mendy in the second half, their best chance was when Serge Aurier whipped in a delightful ball into the box that saw Carlos Vinicius head the ball off target.

The Blues have only managed to beat the Blades at Bramall Lane once in the Premier League era, that was a 2-0 win back in October 2006.

It’s an important game for both sides as Tuchel’s men search for the top four and Wilder’s men search for more points in their hunt of a great escape.
