Promotion hopefuls Brentford host relegation battlers Wycombe

Brentford will look to strengthen their promotion credentials and pile more misery on struggling Wycombe ahead of the game at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Chairboys have not played a league game in nearly a month due to COVID and have won just one of their last 13 Championship fixtures. They stay rooted to the bottom of the league, 10 points from safety.

They will however be encouraged by their midweek performance against Tottenham. Wycombe managed to hold out the Premier League side for 86 minutes but a late flurry of goals condemned them to a 4-1 defeat.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth has set his eyes on an upset:

“It would be just like us to go there and cause an upset, and I fully believe we can do that. We were weakened when we played them last time and fully deserved the draw that we got, but I think we’re stronger this time around so let’s see what we can do” he said.

On the contrast, Brentford are unbeaten in their last 17 league outings, their last defeat coming over three months ago. The West London side now have automatic promotion in their sight. They currently sit in fourth, two points behind the automatic spots with a game in hand on the teams above. 

The Bees will see Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against fellow promotion hopefuls Swansea as a wasted opportunity. Having taken the lead with a man advantage in the last 20 minutes, they allowed the Swans to equalise and went on to miss some big chances which would have seen them go second. 

Following the draw, manager Thomas Frank shared his views on the race for promotion. 

“These six teams will take it right until the end. Last year Leeds were the best team in the division but this year there isn’t one team that stands out. It’s going to be interesting,” 

Team news:

Brentford will be without Charlie Goode but Christian Norgaard, Shandon Baptiste and Pontus Jansson could all return to the squad. 

For Wycombe, Joe Jacobson will undergo a late fitness test on the knock that forced him off against Tottenham. Ainsworth is also hoping to have Ryan Tafazolli back.
