Northampton winger Nicky Adams set to join League Two side Oldham Athletic

Northampton Town winger Nicky Adams has been highly linked away from the Cobblers. Photos from this morning show Nicky outside Oldham’s ground and the move is looking more than likely.

The 34-year-old has been at the Cobblers for 18 months now since re-signing in the summer of 2019. His first spell only lasted one season but was the famous title-winning season, with Northampton securing 99 points. He has secured two promotions while at the Cobblers. With recent signing Mickel Miller coming in, minutes will be limited for Adams and with the opportunity to play more football would be silly to turn down. Nicky Adams is also based up north so its a move closer back home.

So far this season, Adams has only been a squad player with limited starts for the winger and with Cobblers regularly chopping and changing the style, it was hard to stake a place. The ‘assist king’ has averaged double-figure assists from the last four seasons but currently only has one to his name.

The 34-year-old has a love for the Cobblers and also current manager Keith Curle. Curle was one of the main reasons Adams wanted to return for the second time and, with game time-limited, Curle won’t stand in Adams way to go and play football matches.

As well, with the new rule of the 22 man squad, it frees up space for Curle to bring in a new face.

Curle has already brought three new faces to the PTS Academy Stadium this January and will look to bring in more with departures. The Northamptonshire club also announced yesterday that target man Harry Smith has been sent on loan to Motherwell until the end of the season.

If the deal goes ahead, Oldham will be benefited from a very experienced winger. He currently has 517 EFL appearances to his name and will look to add to those before he retires.

With the deal being very close to to be wrapped up, it will be a sad goodbye for the Cobblers fans who have a good relationship with Nicky but a fantastic acquisition for the Latics.
