Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos this month according to Fabrizio Romano speaking on the Here We Go Podcast.
Fabrizio Romano spoke about the opportunity of the Greek defender moving to Merseyside:
“He was offered to Liverpool too. Liverpool were looking for an opportunity and he was offered to Liverpool, but at the moment he’s not an option.
“Liverpool were offered the defender partially because of the Greek’s relationship with Klopp from their days at Dortmund. At the moment Liverpool have no decided whether they’re signing a centre-back or not”
The Arsenal defender has been linked with Italy side Genoa and other European clubs but Romano has confirmed that nothing has been decided.
Sokratis has made 44 appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League, scoring three goals and keeping nine clean sheets. The 32-year-old has conceded 58 goals and averages 21 wins and 11 losses with the Gunners.
The Reds are struggling massively with injuries at the back, already losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are unlikely to play again this season due to long-term knee injuries, whilst Joel Matip is still recovering from the groin injury he picked up against West Brom.
This leaves defensive midfielder Fabinho as Klopp’s only hope, along with the inexperienced duo of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips who have been trusted to step up alongside the Brazilian. Captain Jordan Henderson is also being rotated as a defender.
The Reds have currently no senior centre backs available but Liverpool manager has insisted that the club won’t be signing a centre-back soon due to the current pandemic, “It’s not the time for massive investment.”
Liverpool are looking to defend their Premier League title and improve on their Champions League campaign and will want to have players he can rely on to not make similar mistakes like they have done this season.
It would be a risk for Jurgen Klopp not to sign someone this window and carry on with the squad he’s got available to him now, considering the amount games that he’s got coming up in such a short space of time.
