Callum Ilott qualifies on pole for the third time this season with Robert Shwartzman in second and Uni-Virtuosi teammate Guanyu Zhou in third.
Qualifying
The 30-minute qualifying session got underway at the Circuit de Catalunya. Dan Ticktum was the fastest in the practice session ahead of Mick Schumacher by nine-thousands of a second, could the Brit end up on pole after the qualifying session?
Everyone poured out the pit-lane on the red striped soft tyres as all of the drivers apart from Guanyu Zhou left the pit-lane to set their banker laps.
Nikita Mazepin set the first timed-lap of the qualifying session with a time of 1:30.229 with Robert Shwartzman hit back with a fine lap of 1:28.862 almost two seconds faster than Mazepin.
With 20 minutes left in the qualifying session, Shwartzman was on pole so far with Callum Ilott and Mick Schumacher in second and third respectively. Yuki Tsunoda in P4, Jack Aitken in P5, Dan Ticktum in P6, Felipe Drugovich in P7, Louis Deletraz in P8, Jahun Daruvala in P9 and Sean Geleal rounded off the top ten.
Everyone peeled into the pits with only Guanyu Zhou out on a very empty track with the Uni-Virtuosi driver looking to capitalise on the empty track with no other drivers about. Zhou missed out by one-hundredth on pole position as he moved up to second.
With only ten minutes left in the session, the top five were separated by four-hundredths of a second and the top ten separated by four-tenths.
Ilott then delivered a superb lap of 1:28.381 which was almost half a second faster than Shwartzman who moved back to second.
Deletraz moved up to eighth with Drugovich moving up to second. Shwartzman moved two-tenths behind Ilott but unable to go onto pole.
Zhou left the pit-lane with four minutes left of the session as the Renault Academy driver looked to de-throne his Uni-Virtuosi teammate.
Zhou for the second time in the qualifying session was all alone on the Circuit de Catalunya as he looked to displace his teammate but only improved to third.
Ilott finished the session on pole and an extra four points for qualifying on pole for the Ferrari Academy driver as he qualifies on pole for the third time this season.
Final Grid For The Race
Callum Ilott qualified on pole for a second successive race ahead of Robert Shwartzman and teammate Guanyu Zhou. Felipe Drugovich joined Zhou on the second row P4. Shwartzman’s Prema teammate Mick Schumacher lined up in P5 with Yuki Tsunoda alongside him in P6. Jack Aitken and Dan Ticktum will start P7 and P8 respectively with Nikita Mazepin and Louis Deletraz rounding off the top ten.
Artem Markelov was in P11 with Jehan Daruvala in P12, Sean Geleal in P13 and Christian Lundgaard in P14, Roy Nissany was P15 and Marino Sato in P16, Pedro Piquet in P17 and Nobuharu Matsushita in P18, Marcus Armstrong was in P19 and Luca Ghiotto in P20 with Giuliano Alesi and Guilherme Samaia on the back-row of the grid qualifying P21 and P22 respectively.
