Waldstadion walkover as Die Fohlen win on Bundesliga return

Borussia Mönchengladbach picked up an impressive 3-1 victory away at Eintracht Frankfurt in their first match since coronavirus postponement.

It was a dominant performance for Mönchengladbach, and they got off to the perfect after just 36 seconds. Top scorer Alessanne Plea slotted into the bottom right corner of Kevin Trapp’s net.

The side from North-Rhine Westphalia pressed on and just six minutes later they doubled their lead. Eintracht couldn’t deal with the skill of Remy Bensebiani, whose low ball allowed Marcus Thuram, son of French World Cup winner, Lillian, to tap in from six yards.

The home side did have opporunities to get back into the game. Firstly, Daichi Kamada‘s attempt across the face of goal was cleared away.

Then, Croation Filip Kostic’s powerful free kick from 30 yards forced ‘keeper Yann Sommer to make a tremendous save.

But Borussia Mönhengladbach continued to control the game and almost found a third when Plea’s curler from the edge of the area hit the inside of the woodwork.

But with 27 minutes to go, the away side would seal the deal. Evan N’Dicka brought down Brett Embolo in the penalty area. Bensebiani converted from the spot to make it 3-0 in Hesse.

Frankfurt would get a consolation in the 83rd minute through on-loan AC Milan striker, Andre Silva. It means that Marco Rosse’s side are still without a clean sheet in 2020.

Not long after the visitors did get the chance to restore their three-goal cushion. They tore through the Frankfurt defence like a hot kinfe through butter. Jonas Hofmann looked like he was going to score, but a remarkable goal-line clearance from Martin Hinteregger, denied Die Fohlen a fourth.

But Hofmann’s miss paled into insignificance, as the away side prevailed 3-1.

That win takes Borussia Mönchengladbach into third after RB Leipzig were held at home to Freiburg. They move five points clear of Bayer Leverkusen in fifth, who they play at Borussia Park next Saturday. They also move just three points behind leaders Bayern Munich, keeping their title hopes alive.

But for Frankfurt they drop to 14th, just five points above the relegation play off spot.
