CHICAGO, IL–A typical preseason match for a pair of Europeans sides looking to win multiple trophies this season on a rainy night at Soldier Field to open the International Champions Cup. A Mario Götze penalty proved the difference as Borussia Dortmund went out 1-0 winners over Manchester City before a crowd of 34,629.
Christian Pulisic started and played 45 minutes as did all of the Dortmund starting lineup apart from goalkeeper Marwin Hitz. Pulisic ended up drawing the penalty in the 27th minute after being taken down in the area by Olesandr Zinchenko. Claudio Bravo got a hand on Götze’s spot kick, but could not keep it out.
“It felt great. I felt good today right from the start,” said Pulisic. “I love having those actions early in the game where I can go at defenders. I felt really confident today and I was glad I could help my team.”
City had a chance to equalize before halftime on a free kick by new signing Riyad Mahrez, but was parried over by Hitz. Dortmund had a chance to double the lead in the second half through Mahmoud Dahoud in the 72nd minute, but was denied by Joe Hart.
Former New York City FC player Jack Harrison played all 90 minutes for Manchester City while Leroy Sane came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute. City coach Pep Guardiola talked about Harrison after the match and how well he has adapted to Man City.
“He played tough,” said Guardiola. “He was so quick and he made a lot of action on the right side. He’s another guy he played in the United States. He came here and after one week he understood many things and did an amazing job.”
Dortmund head to Charlotte to play Liverpool on Sunday and later Benfica in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Manchester City play Liverpool at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Wednesday night and then against Bayern Munich in Miami on July 28th.
