BRIDGEVIEW, IL–Martinique was always going to be up against it against Mexico. For them, it was a “learning experience” in the hopes that one day they will be at a higher level.

Indeed, Mexico would put ten past the French overseas department meaning they just need a draw against Jamaica on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

Mexico needed just six minutes to get on the board. Tanya Samarzich bundled the first one over the line after some careless defending by Martinique. It would say 1-0 for 22 minutes—the longest period between goals on the night.

Luz Duarte made it 2-0 in the 28th minute after ex-Red Star collecting Dinora Garza’s cross and tapping into an open net. The third goal came six minutes later when Sandra Mayor came down the right side and scored from an acute angle past keeper Cathy Bellune.

Two minutes later, it was four via an own goal after Garza’s corner was knocked in by Johanne Guilou. Mexico added a fifth five minutes before the break as Alina Garciamendez headed in a corner from Mayor.

Duarte added a second goal in the 49th minute from 25 yards out to make it 6-0. Garza got on the scoresheet nine minutes later on a free kick. Monica Ocampo netted a pair as a substitute in minutes 75 and 87. Teresa Noyola, after a couple missed chances, finally got a goal of her own in stoppage time to put Mexico into double digits and complete the scoring.

There was a reason why Bellune was carried on for the whole despite taking several knocks and facing 15 shots on target.

“She’s the best and that is why she felt she that could continue,” said Martinique head coach Charlain Marie Jeanne.

“The second keeper is really, really bad,” added technical director Jocelyn Germe.”

“We know our level,” continued Germe. “We’ve come to learn. It’s important for us to play and not hang our heads. Ten years ago, Mexico lost 6-0 against Canada. We weren’t invited, we qualified as fourth in the Caribbean.

“Twenty years ago, Martinique played it’s first men’s Gold Cup against Mexico and lost 9-0. Last year, Martinique’s men beat Canada in the Gold Cup. We are confident [that the women will progress].

“We never stopped. We came here to play. Even though they scored 10 goals, we still played. That’s important.”

Martinique will continue their learning experience against Costa Rica while Mexico will look to advance to the semifinals with at least a draw against Jamaica on Tuesday in DC.
