More than 6 million fans have applied for the 3 million available tickets for the Brazil World Cup finals. Over 70% of applications came from the host country Brazil.

Once again though. the United States leads the way with the most of any non host country. 374,065 applications have been received from the USA, a full 107,128 more than the second place nation, Brazil’s close neighbours Argentina.

Germany, Chile, England and Australia make up 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Of course, there is no guarantee that all those applying are interested in supporting the American side.  The tenth placed nation in the list is Canada who have not qualified.

49,968 applications came from there and there is no way of knowing which games those fans wish to see, even assuming they are closely following any particular national side.

Top ticket applications by country

Brazil: 4,368,029
United States: 374,065
Argentina: 266,937
Germany: 134,899
Chile: 102,288
England: 96,780
Australia: 88,082
Japan: 69,806
Colombia: 55,379
Canada: 49,968

The United States is not topping this list for the first time. It also topped the list in 2010.

FIFA will hold a random draw to decide who the lucky applicants are.

A total of 6,164,682 requests came in from 203 countries, with more than 70% from Brazil according to FIFA and fans will be allowed to buy tickets again on 8 December following the World Cup draw.

The USA, Costa Rica, Brazil, Netherlands, Australia, Iran, South Korea, and Japan have already ensured qualification with a slew of European countries set to join them tonight.

Germany, Belgium and tiny Bosnia-Herzogovina will probably wrap things up tonight. If Switzerland win in Albania, they are through. Russia may qualify if Portugal lose at home to Israel.

If Honduras beat Costa Rica tonight and Mexico draw with Panama, then Honduras will also qualify.
