RIFC & Charleston Battery battle to 1-1 draw

SMITHFIELD, RIRhode Island FC (11-15-7, 48 pts.) drew 1-1 versus the Charleston Battery (17-10-6, 61 pts.) on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to a crowd of 4,500.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Koke Vegas starting in the net with a backline of Frank Nodarse (left), Karifa Yao (center) and Grant Stoneman (right). The midfield consisted of Morris Duggan (left) Marc Ybarra (left center mid), Zachary Herivaux (central), Clay Holstad (right center mid) and Stephen Turnbull (right). The forward roles were manned by Noah Fuson (left) and JJ Williams (right).

Rhode Island had 2 players out due to injury. They included Albert Dikwa (leg) and Isaac Angking (R-ACL).

The match began with Charleston Battery starting from the center circle and immediately progressing the ball into Rhode Island FC’s defensive third.

In the 16th minute, RIFC midfielder Marc Ybarra was issued a yellow card.

Charleston Battery’s first major chance came in the 42nd minute when forward #13 Nick Markanich’s header went just wide of the left post.

Entering the 45+1 minute, RIFC gained the lead.

Midfielder Marc Ybarra managed to find forward Noah Fuson in behind for the simple finish to make it 1-0 to RIFC just before halftime.

After the initial 45 minutes, the match entered halftime with RIFC ahead 1-0.

The second half began with RIFC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Charleston’s defensive third.

In the 49th minute, RIFC midfielder Clay Holstad was issued a yellow card.

Just six minutes later, in the 56th minute, Charleston Battery defender #16 Graham Smith was issued a yellow card.

In the 60th minute, Charleston Battery head coach made his first two changes of the match by replacing defender #62 Nathan Dos Santos and forward #36 Jackson Conway with midfielder #14 Jay Chapman and forward #9 MD Myers.

RIFC’s next best chance came entering the 67th minute when Clay Holstad’s effort was met with a comfortable save by goalkeeper #1 Adam Grinwis.

In the 66th minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his first change of the match by replacing midfielder Stephen Turnbull with forward Jojea Kwizera.

Just two minutes later, Charleston Battery head coach made his third change of the match by replacing midfielder #10 Arturo Rodriguez with midfielder #8 Emilio Ycaza.

Entering the 71st minute, Charleston Battery leveled the scoreline.

Following a poor giveaway after a blocked shot by goalkeeper Koke Vegas, forward #9 MD Myers followed up and finished the tap-in to make it 1-1.

RIFC’s next best chance came from a header by Karifa Yao in the 73rd minute when his header was saved by goalkeeper #1 Adam Grinwis.

Charleston’s next best chance came in the 74th minute when forward #8 Emilio Ycaza was denied by goalkeeper Koke Vegas.

In the 76th minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his second change of the match by replacing midfielder Morris Duggan with midfielder Jack Panayotou.

Entering the 82nd minute, RIFC were granted a penalty kick after goalkeeper #1 Adam Grinwis took down midfielder Jack Panayotou.

Forward Noah Fuson stepped up, but his effort was saved by a diving goalkeeper #1 Adam Grinwis.

In the 86th minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his final change of the match by replacing midfielder Marc Ybarra with midfielder Joe Brito.

Just three minutes later, Charleston Battery head coach made his two final changes of the match by replacing defender #5 Leland Archer and midfielder #80 Juan Torres with midfielder #15 Samuel Biek and forward #7 Prince Saydee.

In the 90+5 minute, Charleston Battery defender #19 Robbie Crawford was issued a yellow card.

After the 90+8 minutes, the match concluded with Rhode Island drawing 1-1 with Charleston Battery.

With the result, RIFC remain in 5th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

Rhode Island FC (11-15-7, 48 pts.) return home to face Miami FC (3-2-28, 11 pts.) at Beirne Stadium. The match kicks off on Saturday, October 26th at 9:00p.m. on ESPN+.
