Liverpool host Wolves in a possible title deciding tie

With the fate of the title hanging in the balance Liverpool need to beat Wolves, even then they need help if they are to win the Premier League.

This is because Brighton will need to either beat or draw with current table-toppers Manchester City. If this isn’t achieved the Reds can only finish a point off the trophy. Jurgen Klopp’s side are searching for their first league title since 1989-90, while the Liverpool boss hasn’t won a trophy yet in his Anfield tenure.

Regardless of the result here the Reds will meet Tottenham in a Champions League final on 1st June in the search of a first trophy under the German.

The last time the Wolves and Liverpool faced off was back in December where Liverpool won 2-0 after Mohamed Salah scored and assisted Virgil Van Dijk’s goal.

Since the turn of the year Liverpool have lost just three times, including that FA Cup loss to Wolves. In the last six games, the Merseyside based outfit have also lost as they travelled to the Camp Nou and lost 3-0. However, they won the reverse fixture 4-0 most recently and have beaten Newcastle (3-2); Huddersfield (5-0); Cardiff (2-0) and FC Porto 4-1 in the other games.

Wolves have become the best of the rest in the Premier League, but have failed away from home in recent matches, failing to win three times in their most recent away games. Those were in the FA Cup Semi-Final as they lost 3-2 to Watford after extra-time; 3-1 away loss to Southampton and 0-0 draw to Brighton

Since the run of defeats Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have had contrasting fortunes at Molineux, winning three in a row, beating Arsenal 3-1; Watford 2-1 and Fulham 1-0.

“The only thing we can do is win the game. In this situation it looks like Wolves and Brighton they are there [to compete], Wolves had ambitions all year, seventh in an unbelievably competitive league after getting promotion.

They play wonderful football, difficult to play [against], good defending, sensational countering. Nuno is doing an incredible job there. It makes our job pretty difficult.”

Espírito Santo believes his players are up for the occasion:

“The players rise for every game and every training session. This is our idea, our philosophy. Every moment of your life is important, to prepare yourself for the competition. Of course it is a big game and we want to play it.”

Team News:

The Anfield faithful are hoping to have as many as four out of their six players back for their final game.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (muscle); Adam Lallana (muscle) and Salah (concussion) could return to the squad. While Andrew Robertson who was injured by Luis Suarez in the Barcelona tie could recover from his calf injury just in time. Naby Keita (adductor strain) and Roberto Firmino (groin) will play no part in this game.

Wolves are the only side in the entire 20 teams in the English top-flight not to have a player out injured.

Like last season Salah is Liverpool’s top scorer though scoring just over half of his goals last season with 26 to his name during this campaign. The Egyptian has continued to impress, he last scored in the league in their last match against Newcastle.

Raúl Jiménez has made his loan spell from SL Benfica a permanent one after scoring 17 goals in 43 games for Espírito Santo’s side. Most recently he scored the opening goal in their 2-1 win over Watford.
