Seattle Sounders FC 2-1 Sporting Kansas City
SEATTLE, WA–Winning streaks can go a long way in Major League Soccer, so do winless streaks. The Sounders have experienced both this season as they started 7-1-3 before injuries ravaged the club and they lost eight straight and then drew five straight making it a 13-match league winless streak. It’s now an eight-match unbeaten streak as the Sounders won their third in a row, but had to work for it against bottom side Sporting Kansas City, 2-1, at Lumen Field on Thursday night.
The two sides went back and fourth with chances in the first half, but it was the visitors who broke through before halftime. Andre Luiz continued his fine form with Sporting after a blocked clearance came to his feet and he shot it past Andrew Thomas. It’s his fifth goal in five starts for Sporting KC.
The Sounders would reply in the 52nd minute. Ales Roldan sent a long ball into the box that Jordan Morris got on the end of. Just as he was about to be dragged down, he fed the ball to Sebastian Gomez who blasted the ball past Stefan Cleveland to make it 1-1 and net his first goal for the Sounders.
The Sounders then pressed for a winner and got one just after the clock hit 90:00. A counter attack that concluded with Wyatt Meyer’s attempted clearance deflecting off Cristian Roldan and into the net to give the Sounders the win and three points to move them to seventh place in the Western Conference going into the weekend.
The Sounders travel cross-country to take on New England a week from Saturday. Kickoff is at 4:30pm PT on Apple TV. Sporting KC will host Portland on October 10th at 7:30pm CT (Apple TV).
