HARRISON, NJ–Red Bull New York fell to defeat at the hands of St. Louis City after the fixture was rescheduled due to the weather on Saturday night.
There were many starters missing due to the current international break including teenage sensations Adri Mehmeti and Julian Hall, who are away with the USMNT.
The visitors added two late goals, making the scoreline look worse than the performance suggested. Michael Bradley had to try and plug the gaps that were missing in his squad.
Red Bulls gave themselves a mountain to climb just five minutes in. In form striker Rafael Navarro finished off a well worked move to give St. Louis the lead early on.
“We gave away a bad early goal on a set piece, and then for most of the game, we played pretty well,” Head Coach Michael Bradley said.
Emil Forsberg missed the biggest chance of the first half. Cade Cowell showed some excellent work down the left and cut it back on a plate for the former RB Leipzig man, but he put his shot just wide of the post from close range.
Going into the break just a goal down gave RBNY some time to try and find a way back into the contest.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was next to go close just after the break. A mistake from Roman Burki gave the veteran striker a chance right in front of goal, he sat down the goalkeeper twice before drilling his shot in but his effort was cleared on the line by Christopher Durkin.
“We did a lot of the things that you would need to do on a night like this against a team like that in a pretty good way. We created some big chances”, said Michael Bradley.
It was a first MLS start for midfielder Sekou Kone. Pedro Castro and Connor Faello made their MLS debuts when they were subbed in to the match in the 63rd minute.
Nate Worth also made his MLS debut when he was brought on with 84 minutes on the clock.
A late mistake enabled Simon Becher to power an effort past Ethan Horvath with just two minutes to go. Tomas Ostrak added to the tally three minutes later to further punish Red Bulls for their earlier missed chances.
