New England Revolution set-piece specialist Marc Ortí Esteban departs for AS Monaco

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Revolution set-piece specialist Marc Ortí Esteban has departed the club to join French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

The 27-year-old Spaniard will serve as AS Monaco‘s set-piece coach on the staff of newly appointed head coach Filipe Luís. Ortí Esteban replaces Abel Lorincz, who left the eight-time French champions during the offseason to join Swedish side Djurgårdens IF.

Ortí Esteban’s move to Monaco ends his 18-month tenure in New England after he joined the Revolution’s analytics department in February 2025.

His responsibilities included analyzing the club’s attacking and defensive set pieces while assisting the coaching staff during individual and full-team training sessions.

According to OneFootball, Ortí Esteban has been with AS Monaco since August 7. French outlet Nice-Matin reported that Luís was already familiar with the Spaniard’s résumé and quickly identified him as a candidate to complete his new-look coaching staff.

Luís initially planned to bring Rodrigo Caio, his set-piece coach in Brazil, to Monaco, but a language barrier and Caio’s reluctance to move to Europe prevented the move. The former Atlético Madrid and Chelsea defender then turned to Ortí Esteban, whose experience with several analytically driven clubs made him an attractive alternative.

Before arriving in Major League Soccer, Ortí Esteban spent two years as a set-piece analyst with Premier League side Brentford FC. During his first season with the club, the Bees scored 16 goals from set pieces—the third-highest total in the Premier League.

He previously held the same position with Danish club FC Midtjylland during the 2022-23 campaign. Both Brentford and Midtjylland are known for using data and specialized coaching to gain an advantage from dead-ball situations.

The Catalonia native began his coaching career within FC Barcelona’s system. After initially working as an assistant academy coach, he joined the club’s first-team performance staff as an intern for the 2019-20 season.

In that role, Ortí Esteban helped prepare and review set-piece reports, analyze opponents and maintain the club’s statistical databases. He also served as an assistant coach for the Under-19 team at E.F. Gavà in his native Catalonia.

His departure creates an opening on Marko Mitrović’s coaching staff as New England enters the final stretch of the 2026 MLS regular season. The Revolution have yet to announce a replacement for Ortí Esteban.

New England has scored eight goals from set pieces this season, placing the club among the league leaders in that category. The Revolution have also significantly outperformed their 4.1 expected goals (xG) from set plays, highlighting their efficiency from dead-ball situations under Ortí Esteban.

The move marks Ortí Esteban’s return to European football and provides him with an opportunity to join one of Ligue 1’s most decorated clubs. AS Monaco has won eight French league titles and regularly competes for places in UEFA’s continental competitions.

Ortí Esteban becomes the latest member of New England’s organization to attract interest from overseas, making the jump from MLS to one of European football’s most recognizable clubs.
