Dynamo take top spot at Whitecaps’ expense

Vancouver Whitecaps 0-1 Houston Dynamo

VANCOUVER, BC–There’s a new leader in the Western Conference, and that is Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo defeated Vancouver Whitecaps, 1-0, at BC Place. Houston are now unbeaten in eight league matches and became the third team in MLS history to win five straight all with clean sheets. Vancouver is now a point behind in second, but have won just once in their last nine in all competitions (one of last five in league play as well).

The game’s only goal came in the 34th minute. Mateusz Bogusz made a run into the Whitecaps’ box. He would be dispossessed by Mathias Laborda, but the ball went right to Franco Negri who blasted one into the upper 90.

Vancouver would outshoot Houston, 16-8, but shots on target would be 5-1 in Houston’s favor with Yohei Takaoka making four saves. Rayan Elloumi would have a goal chalked off by VAR after it was determined that Andres Cubas committed a foul in the buildup.

Houston’s defense proved impenetrable on this night as now the Dynamo are top of the West as a result.

The Whitecaps will look to rebound on Saturday as they host FC Dallas (7:30pm PT, Apple TV), while the Dynamo will look to continue winning ways at St. Louis (7:30pm CT, Apple TV).
