2022 UEFA Women’s Euros Group B Preview

In any football tournament, there is always one group that is considered the group of death.

Group B of the forthcoming 2022 Women’s Euros has to be the dreaded group. Consisting of eight times champions Germany, Spain, Denmark and Finland, all of these sides know that one slip up could prove very costly in qualifying for the knock out stages.

Germany

No country got close to Martina Voss- Tecklenburg’s side in qualification, as they strolled into the finals. The Germans won all eight of their games, scoring 46 goals in the process and conceding just once. Their most dominate performance was a 10-0 hammering of Montenegro back in August 2019.

The Germans have plenty of names to watch out for including Sara Dabritz, whilst in attack watch out for two youngsters who could set the tournament alight. Jule Brand and Lena Oberdorf are both under 21 and look quality players.

They will also look to their captain Alexandra Popp who has scored 53 goals for Germany.

Despite being drawn in the group of death, as we all know in any football tournament one can never discount Germany.

Denmark

Lars Sondergaard’s side boasted an unbeaten record in qualification winning nine of their ten games to finish three points ahead of Italy.

Denmark reached the final of the Euros in 2017, going down to the Netherlands in a six-goal thriller.

Euro 2020 will be Denmark’s first major competition after the final of 2017. Chelsea’s Pernille Harder will lead the side, having already scored 52 goals in 89 appearances for her country.

Nadia Nadim is another recognisable name in their squad, coming back from an ACL injury, she is a player to keep an eye on.

Spain

The Spaniard’s won seven of their eight games, scoring 48 goals and conceding just once.

Spain have been installed as favourites for the tournament and have the leading player in the world in Balon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who has won virtually everything with her club side Barcelona.

Spain has an outstanding goalkeeper in Sandra Panos, who as at the heart of their performances in 2021 when they conceded no goals at all.

Finland

Like Spain, Anna Signeul’s won seven of their eight qualifying matches, but will be considered as the weakest side in this very tough group.

The team is built on a sound defence with Tujia Hyyrynen anchoring their very tight defence.

Tottenham Hotspurs Tinja Rikka Korpela is a fine goalkeeper who specialises in shot stopping.

Record scorer for nation Linda Sallstrom finished as the top scored for the Finns in qualifying and is a player who regards the utmost respect.
