England vs Germany Women’s Euros 2022 Final Preview

Only Germany stand in the way of the Lionesses when the final of the Women’s Euros 2022 reaches its conclusion with the final at a sold out Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The two best sides on paper have deservedly reached Sunday’s final with England on the brink of their first major tournament after finishing runners up in the Euros back in 1984 and 2009.

England are up against the most successful side in the history of the tournament having won it no less than eight times.

The Germans beat England in the 2009 final 6-2 and have an overall record against the Lionesses that reads W21 D4 L2.

However, England do have a slight advantage over their opponents on Sunday after defeating them in a friendly 3-1 at Wolverhampton earlier this year.

The Lionesses breezed through their group stage have scored 14 times with none conceded. England had to come down from a goal down to beat Spain in extra time the quarter final before a comfortable win over the number two side in the World Sweden in the semi-final.

Both Beth Mead and Alessia Russo have been outstanding for the hosts with Mead battling out with her opposite number Alexandra Popp for the honour of the Golden Boot with both girls hitting the net six times so far.

Germany have proved a strong nut to crack in the tournament having only conceded a goal thus far. Their progress in two close encounters against Austria and France was down to their excellent organisation in all areas especially in defence along with the clinical finishing of Popp.

In Sunday’s final it will be a contest between England’s sizzling attack which can score goals from all areas and Germany’s excellent dogged defence.

An early goal from either side could chance the pattern of the game but it would appear that England will have to work really hard to break down the well organised German defence.

However, having said this England have proved through this competition they have the patience to do this and play right up until the death.

The Lionesses have a chance to create history on Sunday. Win or lose they have been an inspiration to a nation and have surely now put women’s football truly on the map, even if before there were a few doubters about the women’s game, but by know those doubters have been proved wrong.
