Michael Flynn departs Newport County by mutual consent

Newport County manager Michael Flynn has left the club this morning on amicable terms.

This comes after Newport’s mixed start to the season, which has led them to 15th place. Despite this, they are only four points off the play-off places.

A club statement read:

“Following a period of dialogue, Michael Flynn has left his role as Newport County AFC manager with immediate effect.

“Michael has done an excellent job at the club. He was appointed caretaker manager in March 2017, before taking the position on a permanent basis two months later.

“Michael’s four-and-a-half years as manager have been the most successful since the club’s return to the EFL.”

Flynn had overseen four variable but successful years at the helm with the Exiles, including a great escape from relegation in 2017, upsets against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Leicester City and Leeds United in cup competitions, and two play-off final appearances.

His spell as manager only cemented his place as a legend amongst County folklore. He played for the club in three spells, as well as being academy manager, club ambassador, marketing manager, first-team coach, and football and business development director.

“I would like to thank Newport County AFC for giving me the opportunity of my first managerial post but with sadness, I feel it is the right time to step down.

“It has been some journey. Keeping Newport in the football league in my first few months, then the buzz of FA Cup & League Cup runs, and of course the two Wembley play-off finals.

“I am extremely proud of my coaching staff and players for their achievements and would like to thank each one of them for their support and hard work during my time as manager.

“I would like to say thank you to the board for their trust and belief in me from day one and finally, thank you to the fans for supporting me and the team throughout my time at the club.

“I wish Newport County AFC every success for the future.”

Assistant manager Wayne Hatswell will now take charge of first-team affairs until an appointment is made.
