Bamber Bridge’s unbeaten run comes to an end after defeat at the hands of FC United of Manchester

Bamber Bridge’s unbeaten run came to an end at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night as FC United of Manchester ran out 1-0 victors.

Brig had gone eight games without losing before the encounter in Manchester which saw Neil Reynolds’ side deserved winners.

The first half was very cagey with no real opportunities bar a chance in the opening two minutes. FC striker Brad Holmes went close to scoring minutes into his debut after signing just hours before the game on loan from Blackpool. 

Bamber Bridge finished the first half the better side with a couple of corners but no real opportunities were created as the two sides headed into the interval goalless. 

During the second period, FC United really ramped up the tempo of their play and created some good chances. 

Midway through the second half, it looked like FC’s pressure had finally paid off as Cedric Main laid off Holmes who slotted into the bottom corner before the goal was ruled out for offside by the linesman on the far side.

However, Holmes wasn’t done there as minutes later he did in fact give his side the lead. After great work down the right-hand side, the ball swept across the box for the forward to drive home under the helpless Brig goalkeeper to give FC a well-earned lead.

Brig’s Ewan Bange had a headed chance after a corner that flew over, but he failed to take the opportunity which he would’ve been disappointed with after scoring eight goals in his last eight appearances. 

FC saw the game out very well and kept hold of possession to slow the game down to ensure they kept a grip of a very impressive three points. 

After the game, Neil Reynolds was pleased with his side’s performance and was delighted that his players went out and played the ‘the right way and now can enjoy the joys and success’ from Tuesday night’s result. 

The result meant FC rose to 12th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division whereas Brig drop to fifth place and sit six points off league leaders South Shields.
