Richie Wellens has been announced as the new Doncaster Rovers manager this morning.

The Mancunian is a familiar face at the Keepmoat Stadium, having made 199 appearances across two spells for Rovers.

Since his retirement in 2017, he’s taken charge of Oldham Athletic, Swindon Town and Salford City. In particular, his success at Swindon lives long in the memory of Robins fans, earning promotion as champions of League Two in 2019/20.

He left the club to take over at Salford in November but was sacked in March just 11 days after guiding the Ammies to a penalty win in the delayed 2020 Papa John’s Trophy Final.

Donny will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing end to the season following the departure of Darren Moore to Sheffield Wednesday, after capitulating from a potential play-off place to 14th.

Chief Executive Gary Baldwin, speaking to the club’s website, had this to say:

“Having gone through a lengthy process and interviewed potential candidates, the board came to a unanimous decision that Richie was the right man to lead the club forward.

“He knows what this club is about and speaking to him it is clear to see his drive and determination to be successful as our manager.

“I’m sure our fans will join me in welcoming Richie back to Doncaster Rovers for a third spell, and give him their full support.”
