Strugglers Wigan Athletic travel to relegation-threatened Northampton Town

0

The Cobblers welcome Wigan Athletic to the PTS Academy Stadium in what is a League One relegation six-pointer.

Current form sees Northampton in 22nd on 24 points. The Cobblers are without a win in five after recent defeats to Lincoln and Blackpool but a promising 0-0 draw against promotion-pushing Accrington Stanley, brings hope back to Keith Curle’s men.

Wigan sit one place below the hosts in 23rd, three points behind Northampton. The Latics are also five without a win and defeats include a 5-0 thrashing against Blackpool.

The most recent fixture saw John Sheridan’s side lose to fellow strugglers AFC Wimbledon and with rock bottom Burton beating Hull City, the gap at the bottom is rapidly closing.

The two teams were set to face each other two weeks ago but a waterlogged pitch postponed the fixture. In the reverse fixture, the Cobblers came out winners in a 3-2 win with young forward Caleb Chukwuemeka scoring his first professional goal.

Chukwuemeka in recent months has been linked with a move away to Premier League clubs but has recently signed a new deal keeping him at the PTS Academy Stadium.

Both teams have games in hand due to postponements and tomorrow night is one of many games in hand for them. This game is a relegation six-pointer and both sides will look to secure three points in there hope for survival.

Northampton play both Wigan and Burton this week so winning both games would put Curle’s men in a strong position of having some chance of staying up in the third tier.
