Accrington looking to get back to winning ways against title challengers Hull

John Coleman’s Reds will be hoping they can put defeat to Gillingham behind them as they head to Hull to face the second-placed Tigers.

Accrington Stanley sit ninth in the League One table but, following COVID-19 and frozen pitch cancellations, they are playing catch up with three games in hand on their Tuesday opponents.

Hull will be bolstered with the signing of Dan Crowley on loan from Birmingham, as they make a real dent in the January transfer market chasing promotion to the Championship.

Last time out Grant McCann’s side were fortunate to hold on for a point at home to Blackpool following a Reece Burke red card. They will be looking to get back to winning ways after two successive league draws left them three points behind table toppers Lincoln City.

Stanley have looked impressive this season despite having one of the lowest budgets in the league and they will fancy their chances for a promotion push in a relatively uninspiring quality of league. Their top scorers Dion Charles, signed from National League North side Southport, and Colby Bishop, signed from the same division as Charles at Leamington, have been key figures in Accrington’s stellar season.

Those signings among others pay testament to the quality of job Coleman is doing under tight financial constraints, bringing through non-league talents to impress in the lower echelons of the Football League.

Hull have no such financial problems, with Jordan Flores and Gavin Whyte from Dundalk and Cardiff respectively, bolstering an already talent-filled squad. Mallik Wilks stands as their top scorer with eight goals so far this season, with Keane Lewis-Potter another to impress.

This game will be one that the Tigers need to win to keep tabs on Lincoln, while a win for Accrington could give their promotion credentials a major boost heading into the second half of the season.
