Wolves travel to Liverpool hoping for second scalp in three days

Liverpool. World Champions. Leicester dismantlers.

Nobody particularly expected the Reds to coast past the challengers elect in the manner they managed.

After a build-up to savour, it all turned out to be an anti-climax. Domination to another extent.

Goals from Roberto Firmino (two), James Milner and Trent Alexander-Arnold secured the victory at the King Power Stadium, and a performance to be immensely proud of.

The same occurred for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, who hosted champions Manchester City on Friday, exactly 43 hours before this coming fixture takes place.

After a Raheem Sterling double, Wolves were down and out, but with the holy grail of Ederson’s red card there was always hope. Adama Traore, who ran the game, grabbed the opening goal for the Molineux men, followed by goals from Raul Jimenez and Matt Doherty, securing a stunning victory.

Wolves have always looked dangerous against the top six, but lost 2-0 twice to the Reds last season – with Sadio Mane scoring twice on the final day to give Liverpool second behind City.

Team news

The Reds remain without Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster and Nathaniel Clyne, with Jordan Henderson expected to feature after his shin injury against Leicester.

Willy Boly and Morgan Gibbs-White remain long term absentees, but Nuno is expected to rotate after the short turnaround against City.

From the Dugout

Jurgen Klopp on Wolves:

“I really think the job Nuno is doing there is incredible with all the Europa League stress. I think at the beginning of the season they realised a little bit, ‘Oh, that’s different’. But now they are settled completely there, they are there again, Jimenez and Jota are scoring again.

“There is a lot of really good things there and that makes it really difficult to play against them, of course. But it should be difficult against us as well, that’s the plan.”

Liverpool wins – 51

Draws – 17

Wolves wins – 36
