Millwall charged after alleged racist chanting against Everton

Sky Bet Championship side Millwall have been charged by the FA for alleged racist chanting by supporters in their Emirates FA Cup win over Everton.

Murray Wallace scored in the 94th-minute as the Lions beat the Premier League outfit 3-2 but the fallout from the match centred around the troubles in the stands.

The FA says Millwall have been charged with a breach of rule E20, a statement said:

“It is alleged the club failed to ensure its spectators conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from using abusive and/or insulting words, which included a reference to race and/or ethnic origin, during the Emirates FA Cup tie against Everton on 26 January 2019.”

Supporters could be heard using a racist derogatory term in relation to the Pakistani community during the heated Cup tie.

The incidents at The Den followed unsavoury trouble outside the stadium which saw a man slashed across the face during a mass brawl between rival fans.

In the aftermath of the allegations, Millwall said they will “ban for life” anyone identified using racist abuse. A statement from the club said:

“Millwall Football Club is aware of, and extremely disappointed by, a video circulating online displaying alleged racist chanting during Saturday’s victory over Everton.

“The club will, as is commonplace following such incidents, work with all relevant authorities during investigations into the matter and look to identify individuals involved. Anyone identified and guilty of such abuse will be banned from The Den for life.

“The club would like to place on record its gratitude to, and pride in, the vast majority of its supporters who gave their team outstanding backing throughout the match and who deserve to enjoy a memorable victory. They should be able to do so without being tarnished by behaviour they would find abhorrent.

“Millwall Football Club has a long and proud record of anti-discrimination work and on top of this investigation will continue to work tirelessly, alongside the authorities, to eradicate all forms from the game.”
