Two lowest scorers, Huddersfield and Newcastle, looking for goals and points

Huddersfield Town welcome Newcastle United to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday with both sides in a slump.

The Terriers have lost their last three games, all of them by a single goal. Their latest defeat was a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Arsenal as Lucas Torreira scored with just seven minutes to play.

David Wagner recognised that his team must turn impressive performances into positive results. Speaking during his pre-match press conference he said,

“After our games, people are always saying a good performance and not the result we’ve deserved. We need to change that.”

Wagner will be without one of his key players as Aaron Mooy has been ruled out until February with a knee injury. Tommy Smith will also be missing for the clash as he has a tear in his right hamstring.

Huddersfield could welcome back Jonathan Hogg who has been suffering from a groin strain as well as defender Terence Kongolo who is working his way back from a knee problem. Both will be subject to late fitness tests.

Victory for Wagner could see his side climb out of the relegation zone, but defeat may have them rock bottom depending on other results.

Rafael Benitez picked up the Manager of the Month award for November after he guided Newcastle to three straight wins. However, since then Newcastle have picked up just one point from their last three games, that a 1-1 stalemate with Everton at Goodison Park.

Their recent poor form has put them firmly back in the relegation scrap and the return of 13 points from 16 games is their lowest ever tally at this stage of a Premier League season.

A win could see the Magpies move up a place into 14th and put further distance between themselves and the trapdoor to the Championship.

The Spanish manager has injury woes of his own with Jonjo Shelvey battling a thigh strain and centre-back Federico Fernandez suffering from a calf problem.

The game is a clash of the two lowest scoring teams in the division with Huddersfield finding the net just ten times so far this league season. Newcastle have no fared much better getting 13 goals. Expect a low scoring affair.
