A very impressive display by Brazilian club Corinthians ended the recent European hegemony of the World Club Cup.
A Paolo Guerrero goal in the 69th minute was enough to defeat European champions Chelsea 1-0. Although the Brazilians were the hungrier more creative side throughout, the manner of their goal was fortunate with a deflection off a defender setting up a header for the goalscorer.
A massive following of an estimated 30,000 Brazilians provided a noisy support and seemed to spur their side on to greater effort as Chelsea’s performance remained flat.
Corinthians became the first South American winners since Internacional in 2006.
Monterrey secured third place for CONCACAF with a 2-0 win over African champions Al Ahly from Egypt.
