Lack of MLS representation shows distance to travel

The squads have been announced, and the level of MLS representation can only be described as disappointing. Other than the USA’s own players, only New Zealand’s Andy Boyens and Roger Espinoza of Honduras have been selected. Blaise Nkufo will be an MLS player after the World Cup, but so might many others.

There was no place for Columbus Crew’s Duncan Oughton in Ricki Herbert’s New Zealand squad although the USL/NASL may have been astonished to find out they had been represented, after he selected Tampa Bay’s Jeremy Christie. Former San Jose star Simon Elliot is also in the 30 man squad.
