In his latest Hinton Unleashed video, soccer pundit and analyst Alan Hinton discussed Chelsea’s loss to PSG in their Champions League matchup, Major League Soccer’s opening week of action, Jozy Altidore’s brace and the U.S. Women’s National Team’s win over France for the Algarve Cup.
PSG’s win over Chelsea
Hinton commented on Paris St. Germain’s defeat of Chelsea on away goals in extra time to move on to the Champions League quarter-finals.
The former English player saved his strongest comments for the referee’s decision to send off PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 31st minute of play.
“To send Ibrahimovic off was pretty shocking.”
According to Hinton, Chelsea’s loss to the short-handed PSG side was result of poor coaching by manager Jose Mourinho.
Major League Soccer
A crowd of over 60,000 watched the season opener between MLS’ two newest franchises: Orlando City and NYCFC. Hinton wondered how many fans would attend Orlando’s next home game.
He went on to note the strong performance by the Seattle Sounders in their 3-0 win over the New England Revolution.
Forward Jozy Altidore notched two goals in Toronto FC’s 3-1 away victory against Vancouver.
“The only league that would take him (Altidore) was Major League Soccer.”
Hinton analyzed why Altidore struggled in the English Premier League, and the reason for his successful debut with Toronto FC.
U.S. Women’s National Team
The USWNT defeated France 2-0 to win their 10th Algarve Cup in Faro Portugal. Christen Press’ goal in the 41st minute drew high praise from Hinton.
“The second goal by Press was as good a goal as you’ll ever see, men or women.”
He went on to dole out additional praise for keeper Hope Solo. She made seven saves and stopped one penalty kick in the victory over the French.
