As It Happened
Edgar had a good start as he got off the line well, but Colombo dropped behind him and into the wheel traps to catch a nice tow from the Carlin driver. The Brit retained the lead of the race, however, compromised his exit out of turn one due to a lock-up which allowed Colombo to close up on him into turn two. The top two continued to battle as Edgar made a defensive move and continued to retain his lead in the race.
Hauger made up two positions to move himself up from 11th into ninth as the Championship leader moved ahead of Vesti and Doohan.
After five laps of racing at the Hungaroring, Edgar lead ahead of Colombo and Iwasa in second and third. Caldwell followed in fourth with Sargeant in fifth, Novalak in sixth, Smolyar in seventh, Schumacher in eighth, Hauger in ninth and Vesti in 10th.
On lap eight, Colombo made the move on Edgar as the Campos driver went around the outside of the Brit into turn one. The Italian gained the lead as the Carlin driver lost drive and retired from the race.
At the halfway point, Colombo was first with Iwasa and Caldwell rounding out the podium positions in second and third. Sargeant, Novalak, Smolyar, Schumacher, Hauger, Vesti and Doohan completed the top 10 after 11 laps of the race.
Championship leader Hauger made up another position into turn one as Schumacher was the next driver that the Norweigan overtook to claim seventh place.
Fittipaldi closed up on reverse grid pole as he claimed 13th place by overtaking Juan Manuel Correa with seven laps to go.
A lap later, on lap 16, the Safety Car was released after Vesti encountered a mechanical issue that forced the ART driver to retire from the race.
With five laps to go, Colombo had the lead of the race ahead of the duo of Iwasa and Caldwell in second and third. Sargeant was fourth, Novalak in fifth, Smolyar in sixth, Hauger in seventh, Schumacher in eighth, Doohan in ninth and Nannini in 10th.
After the Safety Car came in, Colombo lead the drivers over the line as he remained in first. Hauger and Doohan both made moves with Smolyar and Schumacher the drivers overtaken by the duo.
Sunday’s race three pole-sitter, Arthur Leclerc, made up a position as he went around the outside on Juan Manuel Correa into turn 13 to move up into 13th place.
The two Trident’s of Schumacher and Doohan switched positions as the former returned back into eighth place after the latters’ move on lap 19.
Ido Cohen and Jak Crawford collided with each other on the final lap of the race as Cohen subsequently parked his car and retired from the race.
It was Colombo who crossed the line first to claim his first-ever F3 win with Iwasa claiming second and Caldwell in third. Sargeant, Novalak, Hauger, Smolyar, Schumacher, Doohan and Nannini rounded out the top 10 and the drivers who scored points from the first race of the weekend.
Quote from the race winner
Lorenzo Colombo was asked by Prost International’s Adrian Kita about his fight for the lead with Jonny Edgar and how crucial it was for him to stay patient and make the overtake at the right time.
“For me, in the first laps of the race I wanted to pass Jonny [Edgar] as quick as I could because I had a little bit more pace, but that could be due to me having DRS and I wanted to get him at the first opportunity.
“He made into the second last corner so that gave me an extra boost to make the move down the straight. It was also quite tricky because I had some Prema and Red Bull livery cars behind, and if I made a small error, I would have been on the defensive side, but I avoided that and it was a job well done.”
What’s Next?
Enzo Fittipaldi finished race one in 12th as he crossed the line narrowly ahead of Arthur Leclerc to claim reverse grid pole for the second race.
