Leigh Centurions are still searching for their first points of the Super League season and will have another opportunity to earn them as they welcome Hull FC to the Leigh Sports Village in Round 10.
Despite coming close on numerous occasions, Leigh are yet to win a game since their promotion back up to the top flight and prop up the bottom of the league table in 12th as a result. They are though just two points behind Salford Red Devils in 11th, with the Reds’ only points this campaign to date having come courtesy of a victory against the Centurions back in April. Importantly, Salford have played a game less than the Leythers however.
Last week, Leigh impressed and almost pulled off a shock against current league leaders Catalans Dragons at the Leigh Sports Village, losing out by just six points in a 30-36 defeat. The hosts had been 18-12 up at the interval but a poor start to the second half cost them come the final hooter.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s opponents Hull FC have enjoyed what can only be described as an ‘average’ start to the season, sitting in fifth place with 11 points after nine games. Their only defeats to date have come against the current top three – Catalan, St Helens, and Wigan Warriors – but if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
The Black and Whites’ last game did see them come away with the victory and the two points, a 12-30 triumph away at fellow Yorkshire side Castleford Tigers. Brett Hodgson’s men will hope to gain some consistency, starting with a win at Leigh this weekend.
Squads
Interim Leigh boss Kurt Haggerty has now been in the role for a couple of weeks and has gotten more of a feel for his squad, believing that they are mentally ready to go and get their first win of the season.
Jamie Ellis (York City Knights) and Tom Spencer (Swinton Lions) this week left the club on two-week loan deals to Championship sides though the period of the deals may be extended in due course.
As such, Haggerty has been able to welcome back Matty Russell and Adam Sidlow from injuries into the 21-man matchday squad for the clash with Hull FC.
In the opposition camp, the injury tale isn’t quite as positive, and Hodgson has only been able to name an 18-man squad for the trip to Leigh with nine players currently out injured as listed below:
Carlos Tuimavave (hamstring), Josh Griffin (Achilles), Cam Scott (shoulder), Harvey Barron (broken leg), Joe Cator (calf), Scott Taylor (foot), Josh Bowden (foot), Jamie Shaul (ACL) and Masi Matongo (knee).
Chris Satae is included in the 18 though, and he signed a new contract earlier on this week to keep him at the KCOM stadium until at least 2023.
Head-to-Head
Perhaps surprisingly, it is Leigh who hold the current bragging rights in this fixture, though that may have something to do with the fact that the two clubs haven’t met since the last time the Centurions were in Super League (2017).
On that occasion at the KCOM, Leigh came away victorious 26-22 on a memorable night for the club as that secured their first ever top flight triumph away from home. Just one has followed since, later that year, as they toppled Salford at the AJ Bell stadium.
That said, Saturday’s clash takes place at Leigh and for the Centurions’ last home win against Hull FC, you have to go back to 1988 in the Championship at former home Hilton Park.
The Black and Whites are undefeated in their last six away trips to Leigh, winning five of those.
