Opinion: Why Carlton Morris was an excellent signing for Barnsley

Barnley FC have been one of the surprise packages in the Championship this season, and are currently embarking on an excellent run of form, which has seen the Tykes climb to 10th in the Championship table.

Valerien Ismael’s side have really caught the eye in recent times, and were worthy winners on Wednesday night at Oakwell, as they edged out Blackburn Rovers 2-1 to take their second win in the space of four days off the back of defeating Brentford on Sunday.

The Tykes are a side on the up under the tutelage of French head coach Valerien Ismael, and really strengthened their attacking options in January with the signings of USA international Daryl Dike from Orlando City, and English striker Carlton Morris who arrived in South Yorkshire from fellow Championship high fliers Norwich City.

You’d have been forgiven for not being too enthusiastic when Barnsley announced the capture of Carlton Morris, who’d only made one appearance for Norwich in a spell that had an influx of loans in the lower leagues, but it hasn’t taken the 25-year-old to start firing for the Tykes and reveal his credentials to the Barnsley faithful.

A tall, strong striker who boasts excellent hold up play Morris has proven to be a real lift for Barnsley, and has been instrumental in the South Yorkshire side taking six points out of their last two outings, with a couple of excellent displays.

The former Rotherham United loanee rounded of his performance tonight with a goal and an assist, and caused the Blackburn Rovers defence all sorts of problems, just like he did at Brentford at the weekend.

It’s already becoming quite clear that Morris is a perfect striker for Ismael’s brand of football with the capabilities to integrate other players in to attacking moves, and if Barnsley are to continue their excellent run of form, and attempt to make an appearance in the play-offs Morris will be invaluable to their cause.

It was evident that Barnsley wanted to bolster their options in attack in January, to take the burden off Cauley Woodrow, and the signings of Daryl Dike and the impressive Carlton Morris have done exactly that.

With Woodrow, Morris and Dike as options in attack, alongside the promising youngster Victor Adeboyejo, boss Valerien Ismael has four hardworking strikers who are all capable of providing goals to the Barnsley team, and all appear to be at ease with the demands of the Championship, this an exciting prospect for the French head coach.

If Barnsley are to keep up their excellent run of form, and continue to push for the play-offs their attackers will prove to be vital, and Carlton Morris’s recent performances suggest he may be the best out of the quadrant.

As Barnsley continue to ruffle feathers in the Championship, it’s becoming more and more clear they are play-off candidates and the recent performances of newcomer Carlton Morris, will only please Barnsley supporters further, as the striker has taken very little time to adjust to the demanding football Ismael wants his team to play.
