Riyad Mahrez named in Algeria squad ahead of AFCON

Riyad Mahrez has been named as part of the Algeria squad to face Burundi and Mali ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The winger joins the 23-man squad off the back of winning the Premier League on the final day. Mahrez scored and assisted in the tie at Brighton & Hove Albion to ensure that City would win back-to-back titles.

This season the 28-year-old has scored 12 in 44 games, while also assisting twelve which has helped his side collect the domestic treble.

FC Porto star Yacine Brahimi also made the final squad, along with former West Ham player Sofiane Feghouli and Fenerbahce’s on-loan striker Islam Slimani.

However, Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam has been left at home following injury problem’s; Montpellier striker Andy Delort was snubbed despite switching allegiances from France to Algeria earlier this month.

In preparation for this year’s AFCON Algeria will be travelling to Qatar for a training camp where they will face Burundi on June 11, before playing Mali in their final match ahead of the tournament on June 16.

This year’s AFCON starts on the 21st of June, with Belmadi’s men being drawn in Group C meaning they will face Kenya on June 23. Before facing Sadio Mane’s Senegal on June 27, their final group game will be on July 1 as they face Tanzania.
