Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero stole the headlines once again this week, after his scintillating hat-trick played a key role in the 6-0 demolition of Chelsea.
The Argentine curled an unstoppable effort inside the top right corner to open his account, before rounding off his trio with a close-range tap in and emphatic penalty in the second half. Aguero is now the Citizens’ all-time League top scorer, and is level with Alan Shearer in the Premier League hat-trick’s chart.
But what are the striker’s top ten finest goals for the blue half of Manchester so far?
10. vs Huddersfield, 2018/19
This 6-1 trouncing of top-flight newcomers Huddersfield showcased City’s attacking arsenal, once again spearheaded by Aguero. The Argentine netted a hat-trick, opening the scoring with a sublime chip over Ben Hamer. As the visitors’ shot stopper raced to the edge of his area, Aguero supplied the perfect finish – lofting the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards with aplomb.
9. vs Arsenal, 2013/14
Aguero is one of the Premier League’s most feared frontmen inside the penalty area, and the Argentine punished Arsenal with a ruthless finish in the 2013/14 campaign. Samir Nasri’s corner was met by Martin Demichelis at the near post, who flicked a powerful header across the face of goal. Aguero rounded off the move, rocketing a powerful strike on the volley beyond Wojciech Szczesny and into the far corner.
8. vs Chelsea, 2015/16
City’s record scorer rounded off a lightning breakaway for the visitors at Stamford Bridge in the 2015/16 season. Kevin de Bruyne’s quick feet deep inside City’s half allowed the Belgian to race away towards the halfway line and pass across to Nasri. The Frenchman slotted an inch perfect ball through the Chelsea defence to meet Aguero’s run, and the Argentine duly smashed an effort past Thibaut Courtois.
7. vs Liverpool, 2018/19
Where the Premier League trophy will be lifted at the end of the season may depend heavily on Aguero’s crucial goal against Liverpool earlier this year. After falling to the turf following a challenge from Virgil van Dijk, Aguero quickly got to his feet, met Bernardo Silva’s delivery and flashed a powerful drive inside Alisson’s near post.
6. vs Liverpool, 2012/13
Aguero once again terrorised Liverpool’s backline, this time in the 2012/13 season. The 30-year-old pounced upon Gareth Barry’s floated pass out to the right wing and, after spotting Pepe Reina charge off his line, lofted in a tidy finish from the tightest of angles.
5. vs Norwich, 2011/12
Tidy combination play between Carlos Tevez and Aguero culminated in this superb strike from the latter. Tevez raced forward inside the hosts’ half, before passing to Aguero. The Argentine in turn picked out his teammate, who then back heeled to the club’s top scorer on the edge of the box. Aguero let fly from 20 yards, and watched on as the strike hurtled beyond the helpless John Ruddy and into the top left corner.
4. vs Liverpool, 2014/15
City were torn apart by their Merseyside-based opponents on this occasion, but Aguero’s consolation for the hosts was undoubtably one of the finest strikes of the frontman’s illustrious career. After picking the ball up 25 yards from goal, and with his side staring down the barrel of humiliation, Aguero coolly shrugged off the attentions of Lucas Leiva and lashed a powerful drive across the sprawling Simon Mignolet and in.
3. vs Manchester United, 2012/13
Aguero has recorded several pivotal strikes against City’s arch nemesis, Manchester United, but none come finer than this one. Yaya Toure spotted that Aguero had breezed beyond his marker 25 yards from goal, and played the ball through United’s midfield for the Argentine. Aguero dropped his shoulder, deceiving both of the host’s centre-halves, before smashing inside David de Gea’s near post and wheeling off along the byline in celebration.
2. vs Chelsea, 2015/16
City’s trademark moves in the present day often revolve around stringing together intricate passages of play on the outskirts of an opponent’s penalty area. This stunner resulted in a very similar move from City’s playbook. Aguero and Toure combined well 20 yards from goal, with the former controlling the ball delicately on his chest. Aguero then rolled beyond Gary Cahill and slotted an incisive finish into the bottom left corner past Asmir Begovic with his left foot.
Aguero’s top strike is… vs QPR, 2011/12
There could only be one winner, and of course it has to be this. This goal may very well go down as Aguero’s most important strike, coming in the dying moments of City’s last game of the season in 2012. With United securing a slender victory at Sunderland, City were in dire need of a last-gasp winner to clinch the league title in the most dramatic of fashions.
Mario Balotelli, supplying his finest moment in a sky blue shirt, picked out Aguero on the right-hand side of the box. The Argentine then secured his spot amongst the City history books, blasting the ball inside Paddy Kenny’s near upright and sparking scenes of fervent jubilation around the Etihad Stadium.
