Guardiola satisfied with squad as no January signings planned

Speaking at his press conference on Friday ahead of the visit of Wolves, Pep Guardiola confirmed there will be no new arrivals entering the Etihad in this transfer window.

“When we buy a player it’s for the next four, five, six years. Normally, this situation in this transfer window doesn’t happen.”

Although squad depth has been a headache for the City boss in parts of the season, having lost key players Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho to injury, Guardiola is reluctant to go into the transfer market any time soon.

“We are not going to spend anything. I am so happy with the squad.”

The injury to Fernandinho appeared to hinder the squad, with Manchester City only amassing one point in the three games the Brazilian missed. Despite new reports linking the defending Premier League Champions with a move for Ajax starlet, Frenkie De Jong, it is likely any potential deal can only be done in the summer.

When asked about why the Spaniard rarely does business in the winter transfer window, Pep Guardiola argued that January signings are only likely to make an impact short term:

“The big clubs don’t buy players for six months. When you are satisfied with the squad like we are, we decide to go with the same players from the start of the season.”

Manchester City’s next game is on Monday night, where they take on Wolves.
