Three observations on Denmark’s 1-1 draw with Australia

1.  Eriksen delivered in just one moment—and then was invisible:  It was a bit of reverse from the game against Peru where Christian Eriksen delivered early for the Danes, but then was held in check for the remainder of the game. His name was barely mentioned in the second half and he will be really needed against France given that Poulsen is now suspended on yellow card accumulation. 

2. Both teams wanted to win, draw helps Danes more:  Both teams came into this one hoping for all three points. Instead, both teams got one. It’s not the optimal result for either team, but the Danes just need a draw against France on Tuesday to advance to the next round. Australia now needs to beat Peru and hope France beats Denmark with a goal difference swing of greater than two.
3. Danes Wore Out as Match Wore On:  The Danes were the better team for the first 20 minutes, but the final 70 were in favor of Australia. The only Danish player who looked good in attack in the latter was Pione Sisto. One could say Denmark were fortunate not to lose this game and are in decent position to advance. However, they will need to find their legs again and it’s next man up after the suspension of Poulsen.
The +1:  Daniel Arzani:  The 19-year old Iranian-born substitute showed flashes of brilliance for Australia and nearly won the game for the Socceroos. One wonders if he will get a start against Peru in a match where they need to win and hope France does them a favor.
