Encouraging news for Bob Bradley came out of a deserted November 11th Stadium in Luanda. Algeria, the African country drawn into Group C along with the United States, Slovenia and England, have received a sound thrashing by one of the minnows in the African Cup of Nations. Malawi, nicknamed the Flames, are appearing in the tournament’s finals for only the second time, and the first for over a quarter of a century.
Nonetheless, they thrashed Algeria (Les Fennecs or Desert Foxes) 3-0 recording their first ever tournament finals win n the process. First half goals from Russel Mwafulirwa and Elvis Kafoteka stunned the North Africans, and any hope of a comeback was extinguished three minutes into the second half when Dave Banda added a third. Those players play for IFK Norrköping (Sweden), Zesco United in Zambia, and Malawi’s own Red Lions.
Malawi go to the top of the group after Angola and Mali drew 4-4 in the opener.
