Fire sign new midfielder, Zinckernagel to DP contract, trade Shokalook

CHICAGO, IL–A few more transactions to announce from Chicago Fire FC as the transfer window has closed. On Tuesday, it was announced that USA Under-23 international Johan Gomez signed with the club from Bundesliga 2 side Eintract Braunschweig. His contract with the Fire will run through the 2028-29 season, with a Club option for the 2029-30 season.

Gómez, 25, joins the Fire with 200 appearances across various leagues and competitions in the U.S. and Europe. During his time with Braunschweig, he made 99 appearances across all competitions since joining the club in the 2023-24 season, recording four goals and nine assists and helping the team to remain in the 2. Bundesliga and avoid relegation in 2024-25. He also has spent time with North Texas SC of USL League One, Porto’s B side, and FSV Zwickau of 3. Liga.

“We’re excited to add a player of Johan’s caliber to the club,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “To have already accumulated more than 100 appearances in Germany at his age speaks to both his quality and consistency. His versatility gives us valuable flexibility across multiple positions, and we believe he will strengthen the group as we continue building a competitive roster.”

Additionally, the Fire signed midfielder Philip Zinckernagel to a Designated Player contract through 2027-28. Last season, Zinckernagel became the first player in Fire history to reach double digits in both goals and assists with 15 of each. He currently has seven goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.

“I’m incredibly grateful to this Club for the opportunity to continue demonstrating my commitment to the team, the city and the fans,” said Zinckernagel. “Hopefully my play on the field reflects my desire to win championships and achieve great things with the Fire.”

Additionally, the Fire have sent defender Viktor Radojevic to CF Montreal on loan through the end of 2026, with an option for an additional six months. As part of the agreement, CF Montréal also receives a 2026 International Roster Slot and Chicago receives $100,000 in General Allocation Money.

The Fire also received $150,000 in general allocation money from Real Salt Lake in exchange for forward Jason Shokalook. He made 16 appearances for the Fire including scoring twice in a US Open Cup match against Detroit City FC.
