Mexico drop Paraguay friendly in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX–Mexico closed out 2025 with a 2-1 defeat by Paraguay at the Alamodome in San Antonio and end 2025 with a six-match winless streak since winning the Concacaf Gold Cup back in July (0-2-4). After a goalless first half, Paraguay stuck first in controversial circumstances as Antonio Sabaria collided with Luis Angel Malagon as the ball went into the net in the 47th minute after the shot. The referee initially disallowed the goal, but there was VAR in this match and it determined there was no foul and the goal stood.

The lead did not stand for long, though, as Mexico were awarded a penalty two minutes later after Oreblin Pineda was felled in the box. Raul Jimenez converted the spot kick to level the match. However, parity would last just as long as Julio Enciso crossed a perfect ball for Damian Bobadilla to put his country ahead once again after some desperate defending by El Tri in the 56th minute. Paraguay would hold on to win and bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to the USA on Saturday.

There will be little opportunity for Mexico to try to right the ship on the pitch as the next international window is not until March. A pain point for many fans of El Tri centers on goal as Malagon was again booed by the Mexican supporters as he has struggled to succeed Guillermo Ochoa in the #1 shirt.
