The ice is cracking: Arteta’s Arsenal era under threat

Mikel Arteta has turned Arsenal’s fortunes around. Since joining the Gunners as manager in December 2019, the club’s trajectory has been immense. However, is the Spaniard under severe pressure ahead of this upcoming campaign?

In the last five years, Arteta has overhauled the squad several times with marquee signings including Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and more. Whilst fans may have a mixed opinion, the fact is they are the fourth highest Premier League spenders and have only accumulated one FA Cup during this time.

The Gunners have a squad fit for title challengers but they are often authors of their own demise. Being reduced to ten men is a regular occurrence when compared to other Premier League clubs and what they seem to be missing is that one player to turn draws into wins.

This season, fans thought Arsenal had a great chance to lift the Champions League after conceding the league earlier on. PSG came to North London in October and were brushed aside 2-0. Since then under Luis Enrique, the Parisians have become a European superpower. Two games and one embarrassing “tifo” later, Arsenal’s season will end with another wait for a trophy.

Most big sides will expect a huge summer transfer window with clubs like Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester City and more wanting to accelerate to success. Arteta will be demanding that the Arsenal board make moves. Early business has started with Martín Zubimendi already costing the North London outfit over 50 million Pounds. But, does this only adds pressure for Arteta? The ice is thinner by the day.
