Revolution II battle to scoreless draw, beat Philadelphia Union II in penalties 4-3

FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution (0-1-0, 2 pts) battled to a 0-0 draw versus Philadelphia Union II (0-1-0, 1 pts) then defeated them in penalties 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 3:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.

Revolution II starting XI

The match kicked off with Union II starting from the center circle and immediately launching the ball up the left flank of the field.

Union II had the first moment of the match when Christopher Olney’s effort in the 11th minute went wide of the left post.

Union II’s next chance came in the 31st minute when a deflected shot by Stas Kornzeniowski was easily saved by goalkeeper JD Gunn.

Union II’s best chance of the half came in the 36th minute when Cavan Sullivan’s point-blank effort was saved by goalkeeper JD Gunn.

In the 38th minute, Union II defender Nelson Pierre was issued a yellow card.

New England’s first major chance came from a delivery on the right flank by Damario McIntosh that was headed over the bar by Liam Butts.

In the 42nd minute, Revolution II defender Hesron Barry was issued a yellow card.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with the scoreline level at 1-1.

The second half began with New England starting from the center circle and swiftly advancing the ball into the Union II defensive third.

New England had the first opportunity of the half when Cristiano Oliveria’s effort was comfortably saved by Andrew Rick in the 51st minute.

In the 53rd minute, Union II defender Nathan Harriel was issued a yellow card for holding back Gevork Diarbian.

Union II’s first major chance came in the 64th minute when Cavan Sullivan’s left-footed curler went just wide of the right post.

In the 66th minute, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his first two changes of the match by replacing Liam Butts and Victor Souza with Alex Monis and Joe Buck.

Less than one minute later, Revolution II defender Damario McIntosh was issued a yellow card.

In the 68th minute, Union II head coach Ryan Richter made his first two changes of the match by replacing Stas Kornzeniowski and Edward Davis with Salvador Olivas and Leandro Soria.

Entering the 71st minute, New England had thought they had taken the lead after Gevork Diarbian found Alex Monis for the simple finish, however, a late offside flag negated the celebrations.

Union II’s next major chance came in the 73rd minute when Isaiah LeFlore’s long distant effort was met with a save by JD Gunn.

In the 75th minute, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his third and fourth changes of the match by replacing Cristiano Oliveira and Jack Panayotou with Olger Escobar and Javaun Mussenden.

Less than 3 minutes later, in the 78th minute, Union II head coach Ryan Richter made his third change of the match by replacing Cavan Sullivan with Zachary Mastrodimos.

In the 88th minute, Revolution II defender Keegan Hughes and Union II midfielder Nicholas Pariano were both issued yellow cards.

Entering the 89th minute, Revolution II were awarded a penalty kick.

Forward Marcos Dias stepped up to take the penalty. His right-footed effort was saved in the middle-left corner of the net by goalkeeper Andrew Rick.

Entering the 90+2 minute, Union II head coach Ryan Richter made his fourth and final change of the match by replacing David Vazquez with Giovanny Sequera.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded with a 0-0 draw.

 

The Revolution’s first penalty kick taker was Marcos Dias, His right footed shot was converted into the middle left of the net to take the 1-0 lead.

The Union’s first penalty kick taker was Nicholas Pariano, His right footed shot was converted into the bottom right corner to level the scoreline at 1-1.

The Revolution’s second penalty kick taker was Olger Escobar. His left footed went into the top right corner to make it 2-1.

The Union’s second penalty kick taker was Salvador Olivas, His right footed shot was converted into the top left corner to level the scoreline at 2-2.

The Revolution’s third penalty kick taker was Alex Monis stepped up to take the third penalty kick, and his right footed shot was saved in the bottom left corner by Andrew Rick to keep it 2-2.

The Union’s third penalty kick taker was Nelson Pierre, His right footed shot was converted into the top left corner to give Union II the 3-2 lead.

The Revolution’s fourth penalty kick taker was Eric Klein. His right footed shot went into the bottom right corner to level it back at 3-3.

The Union’s fourth penalty kick taker was Christopher Olney, His right footed shot was saved in the bottom left corner to keep it level at 3-3.

The Revolution’s fifth penalty kick taker was Gevork Diarbian. His right footed shot went down the middle to make it 4-3 for New England.

The Union’s fifth penalty kick taker was Leandro Soria, His right footed shot was skied over the top left corner to give New England the 4-3 victory over Philadelphia.

With the result, New England move to in 7th in the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference Standings.
