FOXBOROUGH, MA– It would be pretty hard for the New England Revolution to have a season worse than their 29th season was in Major League Soccer.
During the 2024 campaign, the New England Revolution finished with a 9W-4D-21L record where they scored 37 goals and allowed 74 goals (1-shy of league record).
Entering the offseason, it was clear that the club was in dire need of changes as their performance on the pitch was shambolic. With fire under the seats Sporting Director Curt Onalfo & Head Coach Caleb Porter, changes had to be made, and they were.
As of writing this on February 3rd, 2025, the New England Revolution have made 13 signings and have parted ways with 19 players this offseason.
With the immense changes made to this roster by the coaching staff, it is important to recap the decisions, find out where the players are now, and keep track of who has come into replace them and where they came from.
Free Agent Departures:
Bobby Wood:
Position: Forward
Current Club: Free Agent
After playing just 22 matches with New England in 2024, Wood contributed 4 goals for the club, mainly off the bench. In the midst of a disappointing season, many fans stated that Wood was an overall better option offensively than DP forward Giacomo Vrioni. The coach however disagreed. The 32-year-old was on an expiring contract upon conclusion of the 2024 season.
Wood departs New England after 2 seasons where he made 53 appearances and scored 11 goals & registered 5 assists.
He is currently a free agent.

Jonathan Mensah
Position: Defender
Current Club: Free Agent
Jonathan Mensah is a player that goes under the radar when you really analyze this 2024 New England Revolution roster. Mensah played 11 games for New England in an extremely limited role. On a $512,500 salary per season, the player was not worth it for the club. In December, the 34-year-old defenders contract option was declined.
Mensah departs the club after 1 season.
He is currently a free agent.

Joshua Bolma
Position: Forward
Current Club: Free Agent
After spending the entire 2024 season with the New England Revolution II it was quite clear that the 22-year-old former 4th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft would not be re-signed due to the fact that he occupies an international roster slot.
Bolma departs the club after 2 seasons. He made 3 senior appearances for New England. He made 44 appearances for the Revolution II where he tallied 3 goals and 4 assists.
He is currently a free agent.

Tommy McNamara
Position: Midfielder
Current Club: Free Agent
Tommy McNamara is another player that goes under the radar when you really analyze this 2024 New England Revolution roster. McNamara played 7 games for New England in an extremely limited role. On a $435,500 salary per season, the player was not worth it for the club. In December, the 34-year-old midfielder’s contract option was declined.
McNamara departs the club after 5 seasons where he made 100 appearances and tallied 6 goals and 6 assists.
He is currently a free agent.

Tim Parker
Position: Defender
Current Club: Free Agent – Rumored to sign with New York Red Bulls (Kljestan)
After arriving via a mid-season trade with St. Louis City SC for defender Henry Kessler, the 31-year-old defender was looking to prove himself as he was on an expiring contract.
After making just 7 appearances for New England, it was clear that he would not be returning.
According to Sacha Kljestan, Parker is set to sign a deal with Eastern Conference side New York Red Bulls.

Damian “Tico” Rivera
Position: Forward
Current Club: Phoenix Rising FC
After spending the entire 2024 MLS season on loan with Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship, it was quite clear that the 22-year-old Revolution Academy graduate with an expiring contract would be looking elsewhere ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Rivera signed a multi-year deal with Phoenix Rising FC of the USL Championship in January of 2025.
Rivera leaves New England with 21 MLS appearances across 3 seasons. He tallied 17 goals in 54 games for the New England Revolution II

Ryan Spaulding
Position: Defender
Current Club: Sacramento Republic FC
Spaulding had an interesting 2024 to say the least. After making 15 appearances for New England in all competitions, he was loaned to USL Championship side Tampa Bay Rowdies in August to obtain more playing time. After just 4 matches, Spaulding was recalled & never made the 18-man gameday roster for the 7 games he was eligible. With an expiring contract, it was obvious that 26-year-old Spaulding would test free agency.
Spaulding leaves New England with 28 MLS appearances across 3 seasons.
Sources indicated that he received MLS interest, however, in January, Spaulding signed a multi-year contract with USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC

Dylan Borrero
Position: Forward
Current Club: eSporte Fortaleza
It’s sad to see that Dylan Borrero didn’t work out in the end for New England. Upon returning to play after sustaining an ACL tear in 2023, Borrero just was not himself. The player looked arrogant and was a completely different player that had arrived in the previous season. It’s no shock that New England didn’t want to bank on his new contract after the 23-year-old elevated out of his U22 Initiative Contract and would have had a salary of close to $800,000. In December, his contract option was declined by the club.
Borrero leaves New England with 37 appearances across 3 seasons. He tallied 5 goals and 4 assists.
On January 2nd, he was announced as a free agent signing for eSporte Fortaleza of Brazil.

Xavier Arreaga
Position: Defender
Current Club: Barcelona SC
Xavier Arreaga was an interesting player when he arrived from Seattle Sounders via trade in late April of 2024. Arreaga went on to play in 23 MLS matches for New England at center back.
The 30-year-old defender’s contract option was declined by the club in early December.
As of January 15th, Arreaga returned to his native Ecuador and signed with Barcelona SC.

Nacho Gil
Position: Midfielder
Current Club: Volos FC
Another player for New England that was plagued by injuries. Nacho Gil missed 19 matches for New England across all competitions due to a knee injury sustained in a match versus Inter Miami CF back in April. Shockingly, at the end of the 2024 season, New England declined the 29-year-old’s contract option.
Nacho leaves New England with 36 appearances across 3 seasons. He tallied 1 goal and 4 assists.
In January of 2025, Nacho signed for Volos FC of the Greek Super League.

Nick Lima
Position: Defender
Current Club: San Jose Earthquakes
Defender Nick Lima was a player that had quite the interesting season in 2024. He managed to play in 25 MLS matches for the club and was a key option after the injury to Brandon Bye. Lima had a couple of heated moments with head coach Caleb Porter, most notably in back-to-back matches where he swore at the coach on the sidelines versus NY Red Bulls & reportedly dodged a handshake after being subbed the following week against Philadelphia. There was no shock that at the end of the season, the 30-year-old defender would be looking elsewhere.
Lima departs the club after 1 season where he made 30 total appearances and tallied 2 goals and 1 assist.
On December 18th, Lima signed with San Jose Earthquakes. According to sources, when Lima initially came to New England back in 2023, he was scouted by Bruce Arena & arrived after the coach had stepped down. Good to see the two are re-united.

Trades / Transfers / Loans:
Trade #1: New England Revolution trades defender Dave Romney, midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye, & midfielder Ian Harkes to San Jose Earthquakes for a 2025 International Roster slot, $250,000 in 2025 GAM, $250,000 in 2026 GAM
In a massive salary dump move, New England moves on from Kaye ($750,000 salary), Romney ($721,667 salary), & Harkes ($286,583 salary), who now re-unite with head coach Bruce Arena in the move.
This was a smart decision by the club as they acquire $500,000 in GAM as well as an international roster slot in the move while also getting 2 massive contracts off of the books. In early April of 2024, Romney was being offered for as little as $50,000, so the club to get any return north of that is a positive.
The trio all depart after 2 seasons with the club. (Harkes -41GP w/ 3G, 0A | Romney – 69GP w/ 1G, 0A | Kaye 39GP w/ 0G, 3A)

Trade #2: New England Revolution trades goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. to San Jose Earthquakes for $150,000 in 2025 GAM.
In yet another salary dump move New England trades away 33-year-old Edwards to essentially open the door for Weinstein or Gunn to make a name for themselves and solidify themselves as the backup goalkeeper (this is not the case as you’ll read a little later)
This move opens up salary as well as gets $150,000 in allocation money as well. Smart move for the club for a player that would likely get zero minutes in 2025.
Edwards Jr. leaves New England after 3 seasons where he made 20 appearances across all competitions.

Trade #3: New England Revolution trades midfielder Emmanuel Boateng to San Diego FC for $200,000 in 2025 GAM.
This is a player-friendly deal. Fans were initially outraged by the move, however, moving Boateng to San Diego allows him the ability to work closely with the Right to Dream Academy in San Diego, an academy that assisted him in launching his career.
The move gives New England allocation money and the ability to tweak their roster ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Boateng leaves New England after 4 seasons where he made 92 appearances and contributed 8 goals and tallied 13 assists.

Trade #4: New England Revolution trades Designated Player Forward Giacomo Vrioni to CF Montréal for $50,000 in 2025 GAM.
New England retains a portion of his 2025 salary and a percentage in the event of a future sale.
With the most shocking move of the offseason, New England has taken accountability with the fact that the Giacomo Vrioni experiment failed. Vrioni was a good player that *missed* the mark on numerous occasions during the time he had in New England. In the end, he did not put up the numbers necessary to remain a Designated Player on this roster and New England decided to move on.
In short, it’s a deal that gets the DP slot open for the club and allows a lot of flexibility entering the 2025 Summer Transfer Window.
Giacomo leaves New England after 3 seasons where he made 73 appearances and contributed 18 goals and 5 assists.

Loan #1: New England Revolution loan defender Santiago Suarez to Birmingham Legion FC for 2025 USL Championship campaign.
This is a smart move for the young defender. Tiago Suarez was acquired by New England back in 2022 to a HGP contract and has essentially played every game for New England Revolution II since.
Birmingham will be a place for the 19-year-old defender to develop and hopefully crack into the 18-man roster of the 2026 squad.

Transfer #1: New England Revolution transfer midfielder/forward Esmir Bajraktarević to PSV Eindhoven for undisclosed fee. The Revolution retain a percentage of Bajraktarević’s future sell-on rights.
Sources indicate that the undisclosed fee is around $3,200,000 that can rise up to $6,000,000.
A great deal for both parties involved. With Tomás Chancalay returning to the lineup in 2025, New England makes the smart decision to move Bajraktarević for close to $6,000,000 in allocation money while also retaining a future sell on fee.
Bajraktarević leaves New England after 3 seasons. He 51 senior appearances for the club where he registered 4 goals and 4 assists.

Allan Oyirwoth
Position: Midfielder
Former Club: MYDA FC
The 18-year-old midfielder & Uganda National team player is an interesting project signing by New England.
“Allan is a talented young midfielder with a tremendous upside and I’m excited to help him reach his potential,” Head Coach Caleb Porter said.
With very little stats to speak about, Oyirwoth is a player to watch with New England Revolution II this season and might sneak into opportunities with the first team.

Leonardo Campana
Position: Forward
WHAT A MOVE. New England makes the move of the offseason and picks up a young, ball winning, aerial threat that is an established goal scorer within MLS.
Though the price is hefty, Tom Bogert said it best, “Good players cost money.”
Campana in 3 seasons recorded 32 goals and 8 assists across over 100 appearances for Inter Miami. The hope is that #1 he can stay healthy & #2 can continue to produce at the same level.
It is expected that Campana is the starting striker this season.

The 26-year-old center back brings European & International experience after playing for clubs in Turkey and across France. Internationally, Fofana represents Mali.
Bringing size, athleticism, composure, and a strong mentality, there is no doubt that Fofana will be a starter for New England in 2025.

This is a solid signing for New England which allows the club multiple options in the attack with the ability to make future decisions that the club would like to go in down the line.
It is expected that Ganago will play on the wing until Chancalay returns from his ACL injury. He is also versatile as the 9.

Returning from Loan:
Noel Buck
Position: Midfielder
Former Club: Southampton FC (August of 2024 – January of 2025)
Midfielder Noel Buck returns to New England after a short loan stint across the pond with Southampton FC. The initial loan deal had a purchase option, however, Southampton decided not to activate it.
This puts Noel at an interesting position entering the 2025 season as he should be arriving to preseason match fit. Only time will tell if he makes his case to get back into the 18-man roster or if he will be sent on yet another loan or transferred once and for all.

With just 3 games remaining in the preseason and the 2025 MLS Season vastly approaching, sources indicate that it is highly unlikely that New England will make any more signings until the summer transfer window.
