NWSL, PA Reach New Collective Bargaining Agreement

Deal eliminated draft, expands free agency.

CHICAGO, IL–The National Women’s Soccer League and the NWSL Players’ Association have announced that they reached a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that is set to run through 2030.

The new CBA sees the elimination of the NWSL draft, free agency to all players when their contracts expire aligning itself with the rest of the world. Free agency is set to begin on September 1st this year and July 1st each subsequent year.

“The draft is an antiquated model that empowers teams to decide for Players instead of Players deciding for themselves,” said NWSLPA President Tori Huster. “Now, Players can choose the team environment that fits their needs and maximizes their opportunities. Teams will need to step up to create environments that appeal to Players.”

Other features include a salary cap tied to shareable revenues from sponsorship and media rights set to increase annually. The base salary cap is set to expand from $3.3 million in 2025 to $5.1 million in 2030.

In addition, Contracts will be guaranteed for all players and generally prevents the league from terminating player contracts prior to the end of their terms, “with limited exceptions.” There will also be no trades without player consent, the assurance of a midseason break, and minimum standards for charter flights.

“The new terms are a reflection of the collective power of Players in this incredible league,” said NWSLPA Vice President Simone Charley. “The new deal furthers the progress of protections that ensure the league’s long-term success. When the Players win, everyone wins.”

The new CBA was ratified on July 30th and will run through 2030. A full list of players, executives, and team owners involved in the negotiations can be found at the NWSLPA page.
