Manchester United Season Preview 2022/23

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back in big fashion under new management, after a bitterly disappointing 2021/22.

The Red Devils only managed 6th place in the Premier League last season missing out on the lucrative Champions League spots.

Their season, filled with ups and downs oversaw two managers, the return of star man Cristiano Ronaldo, and continuous scuffles between the fan base and the clubs owners. The majority of fans have been getting increasingly irritated at how the club is ran.

However, this season possibly marks a completely new era for United. They announced in April earlier this year that Dutchman Erik ten Hag, manager of Ajax, would take over the role as club manager, replacing Ralf Rangnick at the end of last season.

In Ten Hag’s four and a half year spell with Ajax he guided his team to three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cup titles, and to a Champions League semi-final, where he was heavily praised for his teams attacking style of football and constant pressure.

He is a manger known for getting the absolute up most out of every one of his players. The Mancunian fan base will be hoping he can emulate this trait for them this season.

However, with less than a week to go until the start of the Premier League season, many people have no idea what to expect from United this campaign. Ten Hag has not been able to bring in many players through the door as the Red Devils have struggled to get deals done.

This means that the Dutchman is probably going to have to deal with a team that may not suit his system at first. The same team that has now performed relatively poorly for the last few years.

Furthermore, to rub salt in the wounds, Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed desires to leave the club on multiple occasions to go and continue playing Champions League football elsewhere. This would be a huge blow for the club but Ten Hag will be trying everything in his powers to keep the Portuguese star.

It hasn’t all been doom and gloom in the transfer market for Ten Hag however, they have managed to get rid of quite a lot of deadwood, reducing their wage bill, while also making three statement signings.

Christian Eriksen joins the club on a free transfer from Brentford to bolster their attacking options. While Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez join the Red Devils, both players arriving from the Dutch league to strengthen United’s defence.

Manchester United kick off their campaign on Sunday afternoon when they take on Brighton at Old Trafford. This will be a huge test for the Red Devils but it should give everyone a little taste of the direction Ten Hag wants to take the club in.

Their firm goal will be to deliver Champions League football back to Old Trafford by finishing in the Premier League’s top four. It would be a huge achievement and an added bonus if the Red Devils could get their hands on any trophy this year.
