Leclerc delighted with home pole despite oversteer

Charles Leclerc has said he was fighting oversteer due to traffic in Qualifying, despite taking pole position in Monaco.

Leclerc took his second pole position at his home Grand Prix following a last-minute crash between teammate Carlos Sainz and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Despite the incident, Ferrari was able to claim their second 1-2 of the season following a front-row lock-out in Miami earlier this year.

However, despite the strong result, the polesitter has said he was fighting oversteer due to traffic. Leclerc did admit that his F1-75 still felt strong, saying in the post-race interviews:

“It was really, really on the limit. I had quite a bit of oversteer, I struggled to put the tyres into the right window in the last sector because there was a bit of traffic.

“At the end, yeah, the rear was a bit loose but, still, the lap time came and I was improving quite a bit. I think I was four tenths faster before I stopped.

“So it was a good lap but, to be honest, the car felt amazing and it’s great to also have Carlos with me on the front row.”

But with his home fans cheering him on, Leclerc seemed delighted with an amazing result and a second consecutive pole in the principality.

He said:

“It is very special. I’m so incredibly happy, it’s been a very smooth weekend until now. I knew the pace was in the car, I just had to do the job.

“It went perfectly, that last lap before the red flag was really, really good but, yeah, anyway it didn’t change anything for us.”

The Monaco Grand Prix gets underway at 2pm BST tomorrow, with a threat of rain something to watch out for as the drivers fight for the jewel in the crown.
