FIA deem Aston Martin upgrades legal in Spain

The FIA has completed an investigation into Aston Martin’s latest F1 upgrades, concluding that they are legal.

Aston Martin brought an all-new package to the Spanish Grand Prix after a difficult start to the 2022 season, with their sidepods compared to those of Red Bull Racing.

With previous employees moving from Red Bull to Aston Martin, such as Dan Fallows, suggestions of copycat behavior began to circulate within the F1 paddock.

In 2020 the team, then-known as Racing Point, designed their car by taking thousands of photos of the 2019 Mercedes W10, eventually being fined due to non-compliant brake ducts.

Because of this history, suspicions began to arise quickly after the upgrades were shown off on Thursday.

However, after completing an investigation into the development of these upgrades, the FIA has deemed the upgrades legal, stating that “no wrongdoing had been committed.”

With doubts now removed around legality, the Silverstone-based squad can set their focus on ensuring that the upgrades deliver the performance they are hunting for.
