The potential playoff final that could see Wrexham enter the English Football League could be a game many fans of club might contemplate missing.
The 5 June 2022 sees the potential for Wrexham to join League Two with kick-off only two hours before Wales has 90 minutes between itself and their first World Cup since 1958.
The decision to have both these games on the same day two hours apart has caused uproar as both momentous occasions did not have to be played on the same day.
Many in the Wrexham area have tried to take action to see if there is anything that they can get done to move the game.
Welsh Senedd member for Wrexham and minister for rural affairs and North Wales Lesley Griffiths has written a letter to the National League stating “I have been contacted by several constituents who are requesting the play off final is moved if Wrexham do reach this and I would be grateful if you could give this your consideration.”
The original plan for the playoff final was to take place on either the 4th or the 5th of June. Now with Wrexham in second it is an ever growing possibility that they make the final which has annoyed fans as the Wales fixture is not something that was announced on the same day. It was a known variable.
Not only are the games only two hours apart from each other. The venue of the playoff final is being held at the London Stadium, home of West Ham United.
The quickest way to get from the London Stadium to the Cardiff City Stadium, where Wales will play, is over three hours long so anyone attending the playoff final would not see the Wales game.
Lesley Griffiths also pointed out a very clear point that “…currently, all six clubs in the play off positions are northern clubs. As Wembley is not available, would you consider choosing a more northern venue than West Ham United’s ground.”
This is a predicament that many want to see resolved quickly as it could be an incredible weekend for Welsh Football.
Unfortunately it is all but definite that the playoff final will take place on the 5th in London stadium as the Football Association of Wales has stated “The FAW wrote to Wrexham FC, the FA and UEFA to encourage moving the National League play-off final on Sunday 5th June.”
“The FAW are disappointed that a resolution has not been found and would like to wish Wrexham the best of luck in their bid for promotion.”
The National League have had little to comment on the matter. Only having general manager Mark Ives comment on the London Stadium by stating “It is a fantastic sporting arena with a rich history and very befitting of our showpiece promotion final.”
“Whilst we don’t know who will get to the final yet, what we can now promise is a stadium worthy of hosting such a huge game.”
An irritating circumstance for Welsh and Wrexham fans alike. The only definite right now is that Wales have the opportunity to make their first World Cup in 64 years.
Hopefully Wrexham can join them on playing on that momentous day to create history twice in one day for the Welsh nation.
