Cheshunt look to complete the perfect week with victory over Wingate and Finchley

Cheshunt look to make it three wins in five days as they welcome lower mid-table Wingate and Finchley.

Unbeaten in five, Cheshunt have kept some distant hopes of the play-offs alive as they sit 12 points off of the top five with games in hand on all of those ahead of them. 

A month ago, the Isthmian League side went to National League table-toppers Stockport County and put on a valiant performance as they went down by a singular goal to nil. 

Since then, victories over Brentwood Town, Kingstonian and Merstham as well as draws against Potters Bar Town and Cray Wanderers have hauled them up the pecking order. 

Billericay Town loanee Rowan Liburd has played a pivotal role in Cheshunt’s revival, scoring 12 goals in eight games. The partnership with Reece Beckles Richards has brought a total of 21 goals between the pair of them, and Cheshunt manager Craig Edwards will hope that this is a partnership that can help propel the Ambers into the top five. 

Following a 2-0 win at Bowers & Pitsea earning Cheshunt progression into the Quarter-Finals of the Velocity Isthmian Football League Trophy less than 48 hours ago, there are likely to be wholesale changes back to the full strength Isthmian League side. 

Meanwhile, Wingate & Finchley have won just one in their last six, although they have claimed three draws in that time period. 

Furthermore, the Blues have experienced some discipline issues during this campaign, receiving a staggering six red cards in 25 contests, operating at almost one in four games. Unsurprisingly, Marc Weatherstone’s side have failed to win any of these games that they have been reduced to ten men in, and have in fact lost five out of the six. 

Their most recent dismissal came in their 1-1 draw with Bowers & Pitsea as Dexter Peter was dismissed in the build-up to a last-minute penalty that cost the Blues the win. 

As such, Wingate & Finchley will have to clean up their disciplinary record if they are to beat a side unbeaten in five league games. Should they be successful, they could move up into 15th, whereas defeat could see them slip into 18th. Due to new regulations, the fourth from bottom team will be granted a reprieve from relegation, whereas the third from bottom team may also be granted a reprieve, though this is not guaranteed. 

As such, the North London side will still have one eye over their shoulder, with 20th place Brightlingsea Regent sitting on 28 points, just seven behind Wingate.
