Warrington carry on their good form and win their second game in five days after beating the Leeds Rhinos after a drop goal in the final minute of the game, courtesy of debutant, George Williams.
It was debut time at long last for George Williams, who made the high profile switch back to the Super League from the NRL by signing for the Wire.
A player who time and time again has come up clutch, for either of his last two clubs, whether that be Wigan Warriors or Canberra Raiders, he has always been the go-to player.
When Warrington travelled to Headingley to face the Rhinos, all eyes were on Williams, and what he was going to bring to the game for the Wolves. It had to be a big performance from Steve Price’s men, just because Leeds had been in terrific form, as well as Warrington.
The game was end to end and Warrington were on the back foot for most of the match. That being said, the Wolves had their moments in the match, especially five minutes from time when Danny Walker came on from the bench and scored a terrific try which set up the magic moment.
Having been relatively quiet most of the game, making a few crucial passes and scampering runs, up stepped the debutant, Williams. A minute from time, the two-time Grand Final winner with Wigan scored the winning drop goal to send the Wire fans into delirium in the Leeds away end.
The biggest thing about this were two things. One, as a team it showed the character and resilience of the Wolves to fight back and win, especially when they were down to 12-men and were down and out for a while and two, it shows that even after not playing for 10 weeks, Williams can still do it in the big games and create those magic moments.
Over the years, the primrose and blue have always had issues with half-backs, in different ways and in different circumstances and they’ve always fallen short in the games that matter. It seems like it will be different now.
After just one game, it could potentially be the final piece of the jigsaw for the Wire. Time after time, the Grand Final has been the final hurdle the Cheshire team who have struggled to get over, but they are arguably over that now and the significant signing of Williams is starting to pay off already.
Fans of Sky Sports Rugby League on Twitter voted George Williams Man of the Match and controversial to say the least. However he was quiet, until the moment that mattered and it proves that he can still deliver, after being out for so long and they’ll be so much more to come from him.
