Is Dennis McCann the future of British boxing?

Young prospect Dennis ‘The Menace’ McCann looks very promising in his early professional career.

The 20 year old from Maidstone has looked sharp and exciting in past fights generating a 9-0 record, 5 of which were knockouts.

These fights have shown McCann to be a very dangerous fighter in the bantamweight class. He is exhilarating to watch with an unusual wide stance and exceptionally fast hands lighting up the ring. Promoter Frank Warren is easing him into his professional career one fight at a time but cannot help but get excited about McCann’s future.

Frank Warren has previously said “I think he could be the new Prince Naseem Hamed”. With Prince Naseem being one of the best fighters ever this is a very bold statement for someone who is only 20 years old.

McCann is an interesting character with lots of confidence who thrives under the lights and cannot wait for fans to be back in arenas to put on a show.

He has done a lot outside the ring to engage with fans particularly the younger audience. Him and his wife, Kathleen have become TikTok sensations identifying the importance and opportunity of developing a large following through social media. The interest around the young boxer is huge however Warren is adamant that he will slowly build McCann’s fights up and will not rush him into big fights just yet.

After dropping out of school aged 10, McCann has devoted his life to boxing. He prides himself on training every single day to better himself in the sport of boxing leaving no doubt in his mind that he will become a World Champion one day. The excitement around McCann is fresh in and outside of the ring, which is always the recipe for a fan favourite in any sport.

After Saturday’s potential banana skin, McCann came out of his fight against Luis Moreno showing class and patience against a Mexican who in previous fights offered power and knockouts.

Throughout the fight McCann looked in control showing a range of skills to outbox his opponent and win all eight rounds on points with a knockdown in the last round. The fight showed a different side to McCann, who patiently waited for little openings and didn’t get caught up in an ugly scrap. He kept it professional and showed progression from his last fight.

As a result of McCann’s southpaw and unorthodox stance, it was difficult for Moreno to land anything threatening. McCann’s trainer, Alan Smith, guided him through the fight with McCann taking every single bit of information on and performing to Smith’s demands.

The key to success for the young man was his southpaw jab, which kept the distance between him and his opponent not allowing Moreno inside to land big punches.

It was a good display from McCann and the future of his career is in his hands. If he continues to work hard with the right people around him, the sky is the limit for an incredible natural talent.
